My guess is it’s a strategy to turn him against her because he’s becoming so toxic, that she hopes she’ll be judged positively once he cans her, ie, she wants to be judged by her enemies. She’s doing this to make him an enemy, and betting that makes her look good.

Proposal: Don’t call them “Independents.” It implies they have considered their political options and decided they do not align with either of the two major parties.
