We’re not just at the edge of authoritarianism—we’re already down the slide. Trump’s 2nd term is worse, with fewer guardrails & a far more developed #MAGA movement. The GOP had a chance after Jan. 6 to course-correct. They didn’t. #ThisOldDemocracy @msifry.bsky.social @billkristolbulwark.bsky.social

Kansas could lead the Midwest in a democratic revival—more freedom for voters, less partisan control over politics. 🌾🗳️ @donhineman.bsky.social @unitedkansas.bsky.social

The state’s fusion ban isn’t just outdated—it violates our constitutional rights. This isn’t just a lawsuit. It’s a movement.

People gathered in Belleville to honor #ConstitutionDay—ringing bells, teaching students, and putting the Constitution front and center. It’s a reminder that democracy depends on more than just laws—it needs constant care and daily participation. @wkow27news.bsky.social www.wkow.com/news/state/b...

Fusion voting can be a pathway to proportional representation. Our own @jrdresden.bsky.social joined @msifry.bsky.social at @centerforballotfreedom.org to discuss how:

“What fusion would do is create the space and the ability for more minor parties to grow, to flourish, to build skills."

Fusion voting was banned ~125 years ago by major parties who didn’t like competition—GOP in the North, Dems in the South. But what was banned can be unbanned. Now, lawsuits in NJ, KS, WI are pushing back, saying voters deserve more choice & parties should have freedom to nominate. #ThisOldDemocracy

Fusion bans locked third parties out of power and locked voters into a false choice. Supporting a third party became “throwing your vote away” instead of organizing for change. It’s time to rethink the rules of our broken two-party system. @andycraig.bsky.social #FusionVoting #DemocracyReform

📢 A nonpartisan group in La Crosse is pushing to bring fusion voting back to Wisconsin. A lawsuit is moving through the courts, while Lee Rasch campaigns statewide, saying fusion would empower moderates, strengthen 3rd parties & reflect WI’s purple values. #FusionVoting #WI

#FusionVoting is practical and powerful. 🗳️ @donhineman.bsky.social @unitedkansas.bsky.social

It lets voters back real issues—like rural development or education—without wasting their vote. Minor parties get a voice, & candidates must appeal beyond the base. #MoreVoicesMoreChoices #DemocracyReform

#FusionVoting helped GOP go from a #ThirdParty to a major party. That’s right: a third party successfully displaced one of the two major parties, using Fusion Voting. Ask your elected STATE reps if they support bringing Fusion back in your state.

Fusion voting built the GOP in Ripon, WI—uniting Whigs, Free Soilers & anti-slavery activists. After the Civil War, it helped elect Black leaders in the South by uniting freed slaves, Republicans & poor White farmers. Only NY & CT kept it. @allbaughshow.bsky.social @civicmedia.us

Fusion is still banned in most states, it was done for exactly this sort of reason. @centerforballotfreedom.org is involved in some promising litigation to bring it back in several states arguing, correctly, it violates state con. equivalents of the First Amendment.

As a base line, the opposition must unify. American history offers an example: In the Jim Crow South, the conservative Democratic Party engaged in rampant voter intimidation, ballot stuffing and other authoritarian tactics to manipulate elections throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

In response, fractured opposition groups in some Southern states — most prominently, Republicans and Populists in North Carolina — formed “fusion” coalitions to increase their chances of victory. In North Carolina’s 1894 and 1896 elections, the fusion slates bridged racial and party divides and achieved remarkable gains, although these victories were later undone through a combination of violence and the large-scale disenfranchisement of Black voters.

In Germany, rivals form coalitions after elections. In fusion voting, we do it before.

Minor parties cross-nominate major ones—but with conditions. It’s how you get compromise, stability, and real representation without burning it all down. #FusionVoting #DemocracyReform

Mythbuster: Fusion voting isn’t confusing—it’s empowering. In NY & CT, voters easily use clear ballots with just 1-3 fusion parties. You vote for the candidate you like, under the party that reflects your values. Simple, democratic, 100% American. #FusionVoting #BallotFreedom

Will fusion voting lead to chaos with too many parties? Unlikely. Party-building is real work—but it’s also a chance for unheard communities to organize, compete, and lead. It happened before—suffragists, farmers, workers—and it can happen again. @centerforballotfreedom.org
