CEOBS is a UK charity that provides a voice for our environment - and those who depend upon it - when it faces harm from armed conflicts and military activities. Our military and conflict greenhouse gas emissions project is @militaryemissions.org
The winter rains have increased discharges to the Mediterranean sea, including from sediment and debris and from overwhelmed and damaged wastewater systems. The prevailing current is to the NE and Israel. 2/3

Heavy winter rains in #Gaza have flooded displacement camps, spreading misery and disease. As these @unrwa.org images show, already vulnerable people in tents and shelters are highly exposed. The flooding has also drawn attention to conflict pollutants. 1/3

#Ukraine is increasingly targeting Russian oil assets in the Black and Caspian seas. While tankers such as the QENDIL - grounded near Turkey's Bozcaada island - have not been carrying oil when attacked, they are carrying fuel oil, presenting a marine pollution risk. Image via @tombike.bsky.social

It's confirmed! Our roundtable on #CitSci in conflict areas as part of @ecsa.ngo's 2026 conference in Oulu, Finland.

Featuring research and perspectives from #Ukraine, the #OPT, #Iraq, #Sudan and the #DRC. www.ecsa2026.ngo/programme/#1...

Positive to see more references to armed conflicts and military activities in #GEO7, the 7th Global Environmental Outlook, including our work on military GHG emissions. Reflects growing harm but also greater visibility and better research.

Good to be back in #Nairobi for #UNEA7. This weekend we're taking part in the civil society forum, before UNEA proper begins on Monday. Looking forward to catching up with partners and colleagues to talk conflict, militarism and environment.

We also look at whether military infrastructure may be impacting cetacean populations. Russia's militarisation of the #KerchBridge to #Crimea has placed physical and acoustic barriers across a vital migration corridor yet its ecological impact is understudied. 3/4

Cetacean mortality rose sharply in 2022 as Russia blockaded Ukrainian ports. But why? We explore pollution events, acoustic disturbance such as military sonar, and shifting fishery and shipping patterns. 2/4

We're at the #22MSP of the Mine Ban Treaty this week in #Geneva where we're co-hosting an event on #MineAction and the environment with @npaid.bsky.social. We'll look at embedding new environmental standards, our Green Field Tool and on how to respond to growing environmental and climate needs.

The water index can also help pick out treatment pools at processing sites, changes at these sites reflect the conflict dynamics and territorial control. Our study just scratched the surface and Jonathan suggests several ways to expand the research and refine the methods. 4/4

#Sudan is huge, with widely varying geology and multiple gold producing regions. We experimented with the Sentinel-2 water index and found this to be a useful fingerprint in areas with clay soils. 3/4

Not only does #gold help finance the war in #Sudan, its production creates health and environmental risks, including through mercury and cyanide pollution. Documenting locations and trends is really important. 2/4

The bombing of towns and cities kills and injures people daily, causing environmental health risks and damage that can last decades. Our joint #EWIPA brief explores how states should address this: ceobs.org/joint-briefi...

At COP30, military emissions continue to be left off the UNFCCC agenda. Through our side event, we were proud to address the intersection between climate, conflict and militaries directly, alongside @qmul.bsky.social, @sipri.org, @ecodiya.bsky.social, HI, and the Initiative on GHG Accounting on War.

It's #EnvConflictDay; we're making progress but the challenges are huge.

More people are aware and care than ever before but the rules that are supposed to protect the environment in war are broken daily, and it's people and ecosystems paying the cost.

We're working on a deep dive into the environmental data needs for #Ukraine's recovery, a project supported by @OSCE and also relevant to #Sudan and #Syria; post-war recovery must be responsive to the climate, biodiversity and pollution crises. 1/3

New paper suggests that the GHG emissions for a decade of reconstruction in #Ukraine would be 741 Mt CO2, 4x Ukraine’s pre-war annual territorial emissions. iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1...

How's your autumn going? Intense? Us too.

It's always our busiest time of the year thanks to all the international events that take place.

They are amazing opportunities to speak up on conflict and the environment but it's A LOT. Right now we're two down, five to go. 👇

We're at the #IUCNCongress, yesterday Doug spoke about earth observation and #citsci tools that would allow youth peacebuilders to develop shared environmental narratives in areas affected by armed conflicts. Thank you to the session's Armenian hosts!

Environmental issues are highly relevant for humanitarian crises. Increased environmental pressures - including #ClimateChange - will contribute to a worse humanitarian outlook, undermine resilience and increase conflict risk. 3/7

And even with Captagon production reduced, just disposing of seized pills and precursors presents environmental risks, we found footage of disposal down drains and open air burning. You can read more on this story here: ceobs.org/pills-and-po... 4/4

The new Syrian administration has allowed journalists to visit some sites and the photos are grim. Captagon production generates a range of chemical wastes, around 40 kg of highly acidic toxic chemical waste per 1 kg of amphetamine. 3/4
October 1, 2025 at 3:39 PM
The scale of Captagon production was vast, at its height involving huge government sanctioned labs and worth $5.7bn. More recently there has been a shift to smaller mobile labs but the environmental legacy may impact communities nationwide. 2/4

This week some of the @ceobs.org team volunteered at the excellent Incredible Farm in #Todmorden. We built an enclosure that will be a protected tree nursery and did battle with brambles.
