He finds that T levels have had mixed success:

T level students are significantly less likely to achieve a full level 3 by the age of 18.

However, they are more likely to progress to advanced apprenticeships and higher technical study.

In which he

1) develops a novel framework allowing the flexible estimation of heterogeneous returns to education as a function of observed and unobserved characteristics

And

2) uses the model to estimate the returns to a university degree as a function of cognitive and non-cognitive ability

Some much needed insight into the challenges the government is facing in reforming the SEND system in England from our friends @theifs.bsky.social today
theifs.bsky.social
“A successful reform should articulate a clear vision for a system that supports all children while delivering better value for money.”

📗 Ahead of the government’s White Paper on reforming the SEND system later this autumn, read our briefing here: ifs.org.uk/articles/eng...
Quote from IFS Research Fellow Luke Sibieta: "The government needs to be candid: the current system is failing many of the children it is meant to support, despite billions in additional spending and a complex framework of legal entitlements. A successful reform should articulate a clear vision for a system that supports all children while delivering better value for money."

With government funded childcare for working families of 0-2-yr-olds rising to 30 hrs/wk from today, check out this @cepeo-ucl.bsky.social blog highlighting why we need to keep a careful eye on take-up of early education amongst disadvantaged 2-yr-olds over the next few months . . .

New @cepeo-ucl.bsky.social blog from Claire Crawford shows biggest drops in take-up of early ed amongst disadv 2-yr-olds occurred in areas where it looks like demand for working families entitlement may be high, so overlapping entitlement may not explain whole fall

We should also not forget the significant proportion getting below 4/C in most/all of their GCSEs.

Especially in English and maths, these young people are vulnerable to becoming NEET — and the current resit policy is failing to provide them a decent second chance.

Gender:

Girls also remain ahead of boys for both the 4/C and 7/A grades. But boys continue to catch up, especially when it
comes to the top grades.
