I was only at CHS for one year — 10th grade in 79/80 — so maybe 11th and 12th would have been different.

I don’t remember reading whole books in public school in Charlottesville in the 1970s or 80s. Mostly chapters out of readers. When I went to private school in 11th grade it was a big change to read whole novels, plays, etc.

She is very attuned to this. Was confused why no women were playing in the (men’s) World Cup football match we saw on tv.

I really think prime birthdays should be the ones that are emphasized rather than ones divisible by 5 or 10. You have lots when you’re young and fewer as you get older.

Where did you get that info from? It seems suspect. Firefighters are paid an annual wage and firetrucks must be maintained and insured no matter how often they’re used. They can’t burn $7000 in gas for one call.

I have used it for some family letters that are already online and it’s amazing. But what is the privacy policy re things you contribute? I don’t feel comfortable contributing documents I don’t want available elsewhere.

Not sure who Napoleon is referring to but my neighbor was John Doe #1 in the first lawsuit against the city. I don’t think he was in the most recent one. But I am always intrigued by weird nimby groups.

Do you know who the venable neighborhood person is (if there was one).

My nine year old is a master of the “light on the cream cheese” order.

My understanding is that is a relic of Charlottesville’s own “Jane Jacobs” moment. They wanted to widen Grady and run it straight to Emmet St but a bunch of local folks managed to stop it at 10th St. Like how Jacobs stoped the lower Manhattan expressway from cutting through Greenwich village.

Many years ago I read a history of libel law which talked about how in England it was illegal to say bad things about the king. And it was extra illegal to say *true* bad things, which sort of makes sense as true statements have more power.

What about phone poles that are in the middle of narrow sidewalks? I thought I remembered a post about a place to report those as well.

I missed that one!

I am also sure that the fact that none of my dad's books sold at the A&P checkout had something to do with his critical stance!
