I think you're vastly underestimating the complexities and societal upheaval of living next door to a nuclear superpower that's in the middle of a civil war and that has almost 10 times your population.

I think it's possible there might not be any universe in which we could do both.
chadcrichton.bsky.social
I hate that this is the case but I think if this hypothetical became reality then telling a Canadian border official that you're a Democrat might elicit the response, ”That's good to hear but the border is still closed and that's still a Leopard 2 battle tank so you'll have to turn your car around.”
chadcrichton.bsky.social
I'm going to be honest with you, if the world's only superpower devolved into a civil war on our border I think it's probably just as likely that our government might stop making any distinctions at all between red/blue Americans and put every resource we have into protecting Canada from all of you.
chadcrichton.bsky.social
I wish this wasn't the case but if this ever actually moved from hypothetical thought experiment to reality I suspect the choice for our government between, "prepare to help fleeing refugees" and, "close our southern border and militarize it to the greatest extent possible" would be a coin toss.

At this point the list of countries I'd happily invite to do joint military training exercises in Canada with the Canadian Forces, tomorrow, is getting extremely long and, honestly, kinda weird.

What's unhinged is expecting Canadians from coast to coast to contribute billions of dollars to building a pipeline through BC that no company, anywhere, is willing to invest a single penny in and that's also opposed by the government, the people, and the First Nations of BC.
chadcrichton.bsky.social
The only sense in which bringing up Trump in this context might be honestly described as "unhinged" is the context that Trump is even less interested in this pipeline being built than the oil industry is (and the oil companies don't think this pipeline is worth them investing a single penny in it).
B.C. NDP premier David Eby goes off the rails, accuses Smith of bringing Trump to Canada via pipeline. An unhinged attack far beyond the earlier pipeline battle. Column. calgaryherald.com/opinion/colu... #ableg #abpoli #cdnpoli #yyc #yeg #bcpoli #yyc #yeg
Braid: B.C. premier accuses Smith of bringing Trump to Canada via pipeline
B.C. NDP Premier David Eby attacks Premier Danielle Smith and Alberta with new, nasty rhetoric over pipeline, writes columnist Don Braid.

Trump is fighting sleep during this antifa roundtable and sleep is gaining the upper hand

Ironically, I think my money was kinda on ICE because of what seems to be a complete and utter lack of any training whatsoever.
chadcrichton.bsky.social
For sure, but almost all of them are both 1) on the other side of an ocean and 2) haven't been threatened with annexation dozens and dozens of times by the current President of the United States.
chadcrichton.bsky.social
I hate to say this but in the event of an ACTUAL civil war in the United States I presume we'd be just as likley (even more likley?) to do everything we can do to make entering Canada via our southern border as difficult as we can possibly make it.
chadcrichton.bsky.social
If it ACTUALLY happened I presume you'd all be otherwise occupied, and understandably so.

Similarly, while I'd love to believe that we'd focus on helping refugees escape the war I presume it's probably more likely that Canada would militarize our southern border to the maximum extent possible.
chadcrichton.bsky.social
I wish I thought that was practical or likley but if the world's only superpower were to descend into actual civil war I think we'd be just as likley (if not much more likley) to send every military resource we can find to our southern border and lock it down as much as possible as fast as possible.
chadcrichton.bsky.social
To be clear too, I think a number of NATO allies would respond. It's just that with regard to the people of the Netherlands, specifically, I have no doubts WHATSOEVER.
chadcrichton.bsky.social
I think you mean this mostly as a joke but I also don't think Americans understand how likley it is that our actual response might well be to militarize our southern border to the greatest extent possible while moving volunteers of fighting age into camps up north to start insurgency preparations.

Jack Posobiec is on TV saying antifa comes from the 1930s and is bad because he's a Nazi. It's real simple.
chadcrichton.bsky.social
To be honest, right now I think I'm slightly more worried about the possibility of a gun battle erupting between a bunch of masked armed men who claim to be federal agents and a bunch of local cops who decide to try to prevent a group of masked armed men from kidnapping a group of American citizens.
chadcrichton.bsky.social
I'd be pretty open to Canada pursuing a defense treaty with the EU as well (many EU nations are not NATO nations).

Also, I presume you'll understand my reluctance to rely entirely on an alliance built around the U.S. to defend us from the U.S.

Except the Dutch. I'm POSITIVE the Dutch will show up.
chadcrichton.bsky.social
I wish I thought we'd have the time, energy or resources to do that sort of thing but I fear this plea greatly underestimates the dire existential threat that Canada would face if world's only superpower descended into civil war right on our border.

i should arguably just stop replying to posts that show up in my feed

reading four posts below the post that appeared in my feed to look to see if there's a broader specific context surrounding the post I saw in my feed is just not how I use social media

I'm old though, that's on me (sincerely).
chadcrichton.bsky.social
i was honestly just replying to a post in my feed that seemed to be suggesting that the answer to this very famous thought experiment is to simply ignore the established parameters of the thought experiment but I clearly replied to a post that's addressing a much broader context that I'm unaware of.
chadcrichton.bsky.social
what do I know but I think you arguably shouldn't have opened your skeet with, "the answer to the trolley problem is..." if your intention was to introduce a new thought experiment rather than to propose an answer to the existing trolley problem.
chadcrichton.bsky.social
is the problem at the heart of the Trolley Problem actually that someone's built an unsafe trolley crossing though?

isn't the problem presented in that thought experiment that someone's tied a bunch of people to the trolley tracks and the trolley can't be stopped?

I’ve lived in rural America long enough to know that the entire point was to bankrupt farmers…

We are all about to find out.
