Yes, the point of that passage is "don't be hypocritical, and actually honor god" but the practical application, at least in my experience with the church, is all of the above.

Problem 3: It takes away social pressure to do good. Imagine a church leader who says "hey, do good things" but then also say "hey, don't let me see you do good things". The entire community does that. Where's the accountability on actually doing anything good?

Problem 2: When everybody hides the good things they're doing, nobody gets to see that good things are happening. We begin to believe that the world really is evil, and there are no good people

Problem 1: it allows people who never do good things to have the veneer of goodness... You didn't see me do anything good? oh, it's because I'm doing it in secret just like god says!

thanks @iliatrk.bsky.social. It's a little confusing since there's literal 0 user facing documentation that says "hey, when you say something here's how people see it." Like, how are feeds generated, how do I make sure my content goes to people who want it, etc. etc. 🙃
