Their end goal is to remove Lonnie Bunch, an African-American, from being the head of the Smithsonian. Only with a white man back at the helm will Trump/maga declare the institution to their liking.
I cannot emphasize enough that the White House has no authority to withhold funds from the Smithsonian. It can, however, try to persuade/threaten Congress to reduce future funding.

"No mainstream reporter has the stomach to say, 'By the way, this administration lies all the time and we should assume this is a lie too' after every unsupported statement." They should, because it's true.
