Hard to believe a shopping street this active is scheduled to be removed for more space for cars.

Happy Road (Oyama Stn) is a popular and historied Shotengai. Currently fightIng against a 50 year old plan to tear down much of the arcade and replace it with a road for cars... for "fire safety".

If you happen by Tokyo, they could really use your support and less crowded than more famous spots.

Happy Road shopping arcade in Itabashi city, Tokyo.

If you are looking to escape the tourist crowds but want the shopping arcade experience, I recommend Happy Road.

With government plans in place to tear down much of the roof though (road expansion) you might want to visit soon.
