Do you like ketchup? Not only are you wrong, but you may be a fascist. Not really, but in my 🍅New Publication🍅 "Ketchup Is the Whitest Sauce", in International Political Sociology, I argue that memes about ketchup showcase Neo-Nazi solidarity.

New paper out in @risjnl.bsky.social! 🚨

I explore the everyday foundations of structural power in the international system and advance a new theoretical framework that reconceptualizes the state as a mediator between the two levels.

Time for a short thread! 🧵👇

That’s interesting, I wasn’t aware of any major beef between Fuentes and Kirk, at least not as extreme as with others like Shapiro. Going to look into it!

Maybe I’m missing something but I wouldn’t have immediately thought he was satirising a Pepe meme. More making a joke about the alt-right guys who use the Gopnik meme as weird pro-Putin solidarity. Not sure!

In our latest issue, Anne-Marie Houde examines the "micro-political foundation that enables and legitimises government action" by focusing on the everyday emotions of ordinary citizens.

🍅 Ketchup in Far-Right Memes
📝 A new research paper on how to study Far-Right memes has been published by Dr Charlie Price in International Political Sociology.

Moreover, without an appreciation for the silly/serious nature of far-right memes and politics and the homes they provide, we will never truly grasp the appeal of engaging with such communities.
charlieprice.bsky.social
These online spaces are technically accessible but conceptually inaccessible; significant prior knowledge is required to be part of online humorous far-right communities, and I argue this serves a bordering function.
charlieprice.bsky.social
Through an analysis of the seemingly silly memes manufactured by the far-right Nordic Resistance Movement, I argue for understanding memes as central to home-building efforts by online far-right communities.
charlieprice.bsky.social
Simultaneously, far-right politics have the potential for serious harm, so these communities cannot be seen as exclusively silly.
charlieprice.bsky.social
The paper is explicit in arguing that we pay attention to far-right memes, but do not take them “too seriously” because far-right groups often take the opportunity to ridicule mainstream and leftist moral panics around memes.
charlieprice.bsky.social
In this paper, I challenge the distinction between silly and serious and argue for a space that recognizes the simultaneous existence of these concepts when it comes to researching far-right memes.

🚨Publication alert! 🚨

Happy to announce the publication of my first solo academic work! I critique how 'convergence' is deployed in debates about the Eurozone crisis and beyond, offering a constructivist edge to discussions about capitalist restructuring in the Eurozone.
