I'm sure these are the huia, male & female, native to New Zealand and now extinct. There's a tragic story here, about the way our forebears cleared the forests.

I read it a year ago but I remember being struck by -
* the relative ignorance of new MPs, and even Ministers, about how government works
* backbenchers seemingly having little value or interest to the leadership except as votes
* the public servants trying to keep things on an even keel...
