"The news that the leadership of the Liberal Democrats think Chris Rennard should not be a member of the House of Lords is fifteen years overdue. We have always known the truth, but have been subjected to smears and botched investigations in our attempts to make politics a safer space for women. Others knew this, and that the situation was unsafe, which was why they prevented Rennard from taking frontbench roles. This was a woeful 'compromise' as Chris continues to be active, making the Lib Dems an impossible environment for those who knew the truth. Those who could have confirmed our stories and kept quiet, or deliberately sought to undermine us, have some deep soul-searching to do. Today we have seen the first signs of change. We will believe it when there is, finally, a just process. It should not have taken this to do the right and obvious thing. Something we were able to achieve thanks to a stubborn certainty we were right, supportive partners, and tenacious journalists led by Cathy Newman. We recognise that there are many other victims of many gross abuses of power, some involving different stratospheres of severity. We hope that they get the same justice that is now in the offing for us. We decided to speak out in 2013 so that future generations of women could participate in politics safely. We did not expect a fair investigation to take so long, and hope that the next steps will finally put the matter to rest. Yesterday Alison Goldsworthy wrote to Ed Davey - with the support of Alison Smith and Bridget Harris. In it she detailed the extent of the smears against her and included the following paragraph. You recently commented that it would be "the very least you [Kier (sic) Starmer] could do for victims and survivors" to strip Peter Mandelson of his peerage. The least you could do for victims and survivors is to apply the same rules to your own party. If Chris had "any shame left", to use your own words, then he would have realised that someone who behaved as he did would retire from the House of Lords. As he doesn't, I trust you will act. .

Third, journalists, non-profits, social media influencers, and everyday people need to be VERY discerning and careful about not amplifying unsubstantiated rumors about ICE or other law enforcement at or near the polls, because false rumors (even if well-meaning) WILL suppress the vote.
