The organic depth can show a lot of things- such as how old a marsh is or how fast dead plants break down. When the soil has a lot water in it the dead plants won’t break down as quickly- oxygen is needed in the “breaking down” process!

Can relate! And thank you SO much. I am looking at the effects of salinity on phragmites, so I will take these soil samples back to the lab and measure the salinity levels. Then I’ll look for patterns between those levels and the density of any phragmites stands that were present near the sample.
