We stopped producing these guys in like 2005 and we'll miss them soon. When Arch-Imperator Vance calls the Mr. Beast Hunger Games tributes unpatriotic no one will be around to write a tight 750-word non-opinion with four strained puns and a Stuart Smalley reference about it. We're losing recipes.

Constitutionally unable to admit she made a mistake or even momentarily consider how it might affect other people. It's so low stakes, her error is so obvious, but she can't do anything but her only move, which is to pivot to lecturing about "civilization's end" and "where we" (she means you) "are."

So the search goes on for some kind of apolitical judo move that can skirt around but meaningfully counterbalance the destruction wrought by Big Tech's oligopoly and an authoritarian movement ideologically opposed to the existence of a free press (which are obviously increasingly the same thing).

Unfortunately, many of the most influential people who are nominally defenders of and believers in journalism, both inside and outside the profession — execs, investors/donors, policymakers — are generationally reluctant to think this way.

"He's rich enough to afford to lose money on this" really doesn't go far enough. It's more like no conceivable WaPo-sized loss could ever be real to him. His wealth is a colossal perpetual motion machine that wouldn't be perceptibly slowed or dampened if WaPo never took in another dollar in revenue.
