Can anyone explain to me why the physics nobel decision is controversial (to a vocal minority)?

I've only been at Columbia and Barnard for a year, but the chaos of the past 2 weeks has been Orwellian. Bumper-to-bumper squad cars outside my window, press copters, admin surveillance, and tension you could cut with a knife-- all to stifle basic human compassion and political activism.
