#bsueng490 Plan early, and do not be afraid to ask for help!! Especially when you get to the Theory-Driven Essay, do your absolute best to follow the structure that Dr. Ferguson lays out, it is there to help you!! Do your best, ask questions (all q's are good q's!), and open your mind to new ideas.

#bsueng490 This story was intriguing to me, especially as an audiobook. Watching these two characters interact and learn around one another was cool. "...her hard judgments of me will soften, turn into questions. We'll both feel a sudden snare of recognition-- wildness face-to-face with itself."

#bsueng490 The way Alexia is dancing reminds me of the beginning of the movie at the club/car show. It is almost a form of acceptance and resistance against the Adrien persona.

#bsueng490 okay so. dad? like--do you know...or, are you like just being nice? NEVERMIND! watch the birth happen right now. This is really interesting and makes me wonder if the dad did know all along n was just desiring companionship? maybe thats why he denied the DNA test at the station.

#bsueng490 watching Adrien's mom (?) set the ultimatum behind closed doors really shows the lengths taken to 'protect'/keep the father in the dark. What does that say about the way in which their desire to protect his masculinity?

#bsueng490 car baby is getting SQUISHED with that Dirty Diana-esque move i do fear

#Bsueng490 Adrien finishing the bus on their hair, then speaking, seems to be an acceptance of their current circumstances. It's also interesting to watch them embrace the role of pregnancy for a brief moment, in the yellow dress, looking in the mirror in a stance that accentuates their belly.

#bsueng490 The musical thumping during the bus scene seems to resemble Adrien's heartbeat. This type of situation has happened a couple of times throughout the film.

#bsueng490 There is such a stark contrast between Adrien's persona and the dad, and I am watching this get more violent as I type this. There may be more reasons why Adrien left. WAIT THEY'RE FIGHTING--also the colors switching from greens to reds--this is TOO much & I am concerned by the steroids.

#bsueng490 Watching the dad say "I won't hurt you" makes me somehow not believe that.

#bsueng490 the dad is so suspicious and i am CONCERNED of what is about to happen next

#bsueng490 There is quite a parallel to Alexia rubbing the car after traumatic incidents, after the insertion of the titanium plate, and again after the guy in the car.

#bsueng490 The beginning music sounded very Irish and reminded me of the movie Sinners. Combined with the darkness in the first two (?) scenes, it invokes an ominous feeling. Things only get 'brighter' after the car crash and getting the titanium plate. Last thing: titane = titanium in French?

#bsueng490 Atwood wrote this text so well-i really appreciated the way in which Verna's character was built out, and the construction of her murder of Bob. Hearing more and more about the traumas she faced and the lives she lived was riveting and gave her the revenge she deserved.

#bsueng490 The last page, specifically concerning her connection to her placenta, was gutwrenching. She has no/very little sense of connection to her birthing process/daughter, and the removal of her placenta cemented this removal (non-consensual) and being forcefully disconnected her from her body.

#bsueng490 I was intrigued by "Ganger" and it seemed to be a play on 'doppleganger'. I saw it as the duality of Issy's character: the ganger seemingly dealing with everything, while Issy didn't necessarily feel as emotionally or physically connected to Cleve. It creates a sense of binary.

"Because the figure of the killjoy comes up whenever there are difficult histories to bring up...To be willing to be a killjoy, to be willing to get in the way of happiness, grasps hold of a judgment and takes it on. We even transform the judgment into a rebellious command," (267). And she ate that!

#bsueng490 This was a shift after Binti! I appreciated the way in which the elderly women came alongside the little girl and protected her from that awful man. It was a true show that the same people who the man always saw were looking out for the children, even if he couldn’t see it.Community wins.

#bsueng490 After hearing the discussion catalyst for today, it is clear to me that Binti was transformed to identify with a culture she did not desire to align with. She feels a growth in connection to Meduse; I don’t think she ever wanted that. External factors deciding things… for her.

#bsueng490 “To examine Black women's literature effectively requires that we be seen as whole people in our actual complexities-as individuals, as women, as human—rather than as one of those problematic but familiar stereotypes provided in this society in place of genuine images of Black women.”

#bsueng490 Sci-fi is not my genre by choice, but I really am enjoying the angle that this novel is taking to center a Black, female character in an end-of-the-world, seemingly futuristic novel. I also found it riveting that even in this future world, there is still racism and segregation.

#bsueng490 I was not a big fan of the ending. I understood it, and I can see why French ended the novel this way, but it just felt rushed and a bit of a bandaid solution to a large situation. So many lives were upturned; there wasn’t a clear-cut ending. I enjoyed the novel, but “Oh.” at the end.

#bsueng490 “…the marginalized can also assert that the dominant group cannot actually approximate the traits and behaviors of the marginalized; indeed, the marginalized may be so precisely because the dominant group fears the marginalized's power” (130). There is often power from those silenced.

#bsueng490 HELLO ALL. My suspicions feel very validated now, Cassie x Daniel v. everyone else. This is a lot! How is Cassie going to explain this to everyone else (Sam/Frank)? Will Daniel snitch?! Also- will the Daniel x Lexie romantic thing transfer to him and Cassie?
