That sucks, I'm sorry! Yeah that is a different situation for sure, you're probably right that there's some complexity to the rules.

Really? Because I went to a doctor in Ontario once for a non-emergency earache, and I just had to show them my Alberta health care card and that was that.

And the funny thing is, when I first watched it in the 90s and 00s as a kid, I never really noticed those scenes because well duh, Nazis are bad, everyone knows that. This time around, I had to pause, rewind, & watch again because it feels like too many people need that reminder in 2025!

I just rewatched the Sound of Music for the first time in many years & even in 1965, they knew you don't be polite to anyone who has anything nice to say about Nazis. Even a friend. Even an important person at a fancy party. Those scenes hit different now but they've been there for 60 years.

Sadly, many of our problems with the health care system in Alberta are because our premier is looking at the situation in the US and saying "Yes let's do that" 😞
December 28, 2025 at 3:34 AM
Even so, what are they going to do if there's 5 people with chest pain for every 1 doctor?

I remember reading a couple years ago about a little girl in Edmonton who almost didn't get a transplant in time due to a shortage of PICU nurses, because there were several other kids even sicker.
December 28, 2025 at 3:30 AM
Wait no, that's not quite true. Our Health Minister stands up in Question Period every day and lies through her teeth that there are no staffing issues at all--she's hired like a gazillion doctors, so everything is fine now, really. (Everything is clearly not fine, but she does say it.)
December 27, 2025 at 8:40 AM
Respectfully, I'm guessing you're not from here, because no one who knows anything about Alberta politics would say "it's not a staffing issue."

It's very much both staff and space. The UCP government has spent the last 7 years deliberately driving away health care workers.
December 27, 2025 at 8:35 AM
Unfortunately Smith & LaGrange are intentionally starving the Alberta health system of staff and funding so they can privatize what's left of the broken pieces.

They absolutely don't care who's dying as long as Sam Mraiche will end up profiting somehow.

Also, do not click the sketchy link above, the actual article is here: nationalpost.com/news/after-u...
After U.S. outreach, Alberta separatists will head to Latin America to rustle up support for their cause
Alberta’s separatist leaders are courting Washington and planning pipelines as they edge closer to a possible referendum on leaving Canada.

Only Albertans can make political donations too, but it sounds more like they're looking for a business deal that will make separatism more "appealing" to voters.

But bear in mind, it's the National Post, so they're making that sound a lot more feasible & less unhinged than it probably is. 2/
December 27, 2025 at 8:10 AM
Only Albertans can sign the citizen initiative petition or canvass for signatures. But it seems from the article like they're looking for financial support after that, if the petition successfully makes it to a referendum. 1/
December 27, 2025 at 8:07 AM
Did you read the article? Because your comment doesn't really make sense, given that the bulk of the article is about how protests work to galvanize broader support and action among the public, NOT that they directly change politicians' minds.
December 27, 2025 at 3:46 AM
Did you read the article? (I'm not saying that in a snarky way, I promise, I'm genuinely asking because my response will differ depending if you're disagreeing with what it says about your points, or merely unaware of them.)
December 27, 2025 at 3:38 AM
I think that's the key here: the community-building aspect.

If a campaign was just running a mini food bank as just that, without actively engaging the people donating/receiving, then yeah it would be a waste of campaign funds.

But doing it in a way that builds those relationships, that can work.
December 27, 2025 at 3:28 AM
🙄 Literally every other developed country has figured out the answers to these questions.

It's just that in those other countries, no one can become a billionaire off other people's suffering. So I get why you wouldn't *like* the answers. But you look dumb pretending like it's a big mystery.

But even for people who like hunting... is that photo appealing? It is considerably grosser than just, like, antlers mounted on the wall.

I looked at it and immediately thought, "Oh, colour and individuality! What a breath of fresh air! 🥹"

You can keep the rest of Florida, I just want Disney World! (And MCO so we can get there)
December 17, 2025 at 4:36 PM
I think it's also important to differentiate between types of intelligence. Tons of awful politicians are very shrewd, calculating, & strategic, while being absolute numpties in every other way.
December 17, 2025 at 4:31 AM
Can Canada take Orlando as our kind of foster child? I would also like to go back to Disney World, but cannot visit the US under the current regime. We'll keep it safe for you until the fascists are defeated 😊
December 17, 2025 at 4:24 AM
This is exactly it! Once the candidates are set and the ballots are printed, then yes, vote for whoever will beat the worst one.

But there is lots of time before then to pick an actually good candidate! Not to mention holding politicians accountable in the offices they currently hold!
December 17, 2025 at 4:12 AM
I'm not sure if I'm just misunderstanding your comment (entirely possible and please correct me if so!) but it doesn't make much sense in response to the article, which is all about the evidence that shows what you said isn't exactly true.
December 16, 2025 at 11:14 PM
Or an Archie comic!
December 16, 2025 at 8:30 PM
There's a lot going on in this story, but it's important not to overlook the part where the person being threatening in the ladies' bathroom was, in fact, not a trans lady, just a regular violent cis dude. As always.
