I would agree though, to use a more packaged Linux first. The reason i say this, is that you get to see what spiffy things they do as part of their distro eg. Secure boots, luks, btrfs rollbacks with snapper etc.

What gpu does your laptop have?

I use proton, it’s great! I’ve heard good things about fastmail. As you have a new laptop, have a look at either fedoraproject.org or opensuse.org. Think about if you want a desktop like gnome or kde. I personally use cosmic desktop.
