How did they make it work in Amsterdam?
Basically it's easier to set up fare gates for RER at major terminals cuz the only trains that arrive at said platforms are RER? Does it just get too cumbersome when you have to deal with a intercity trains?

What does tap-on tap-off refer to? Is that how you put your ticket (or fare card) on the reader rather than something that "eats" your ticket?

So I'm guessing there's a fare reader at the turnstile or do you just have the conductor scan it? How does that compare to PoP in terms of costs and dwell time?

I know Uday Schultz talked about this on his blog (policies to tip the scales back to rail) but I feel that the short termism that's endemic in the class 1's is a massive obstacle to them. How do we solve this without some kind of nationalization?

at this point, how feasible is it to recover that redundancy? is the loss of redundancy from how bad the physical condition of the rails are, how a lot of routes are now single tracked, or from how a lot of routes got rail trailed?

Aren't Shanghai's most dense areas quite a bit more dense than NYC? Feels like there's a lot of density to still have in the big apple (don't forgot all the areas that are bizarrely sfh zoned)
