You know how Germany had a reunification tax, we should have a new 2% Brexit tax.

I'd just turned over from Bangers and Cash an' all. Rapidly switched back to the Ford Cortina estate.

Preferably on Saturday and Sunday so they can't go in supermarkets doddering about and getting in the way.

Does PetaLinux on a Xilinx FPGA count? (well technically on an embedded ARM, but wrote a module to talk to the FPGA logic)

Sorry, that was a genuine question! I read it happened/happens in other industries, coffee chain IP rights and bean supply for instance. Fair play if they do run on such small margins. Well oiled machines!

Are they really that small, or is there financial shenanigans going on to make them that small to lower corp tax? profit shifting offshore for example.

I'm tipping there were other offshore companies who ended up with a slice of the pie, sending invoices for 'consultancy fees' etc. I'm sure the ownership of these other companies would be 'interesting'.

If he works for the BBC through a limited company he might end up in IR35 mither.

It would seem a bit unfair to remove it, given that plenty will still have some mortgage to pay off at retirement, much more so than in the past.

I don't disagree Joss, it's just that lots seem to be dismissing that a machine couldn't eventually be conscious, I don't think there is anything in physics that excludes this. So either there is something we don't know that will prevent it, or it will eventually happen.
August 26, 2025 at 2:01 PM
Why not? At the end of the day things with consciousness are just a collections of atoms, a non organic machine with atoms in the right configuration should be capable of consciousness no? Unless you bring god or woo into it or some such.

At the moment though it doesn't seem like they get many customers, that goes for almost any charging station, maybe prices would come down once they get used more? When I can charge at home from 20%-80% for £3 or use a charger for £30 I'm not going to use one unless I have no choice.

Fine, I'll have a turbine near my house, but I get free energy and you have to pay double, agreed?

Who'd have thought Apple became the lesser of 2 evils! I think it's probably too hard for anything new to compete with them now.

Do I have to fire up my old OpenMoko Linux 2g phone with resistive screen? Seriously though, if not Apple or Android, are there any viable alternatives?

Agreed in principle, however that gets difficult to administer. Remember state pension is included, so 2 people on full state pension have an income of around £25k just from that, plus 10k between them from private pensions is probably fairly typical.
