What's your favorite horror movie franchise sequel that's way better than it has any right to be?

For example: Hellraiser 2, Nightmare on Elm Street: Dream Warriors, Psycho II.

My second appearance in @chmmagazine.bsky.social is also my first time being top-billed on the front cover of any publication! (The kittens were not impressed, but they're too young to understand and also they can't read.)
The September 2025 issue of Cosmic Horror Monthly, featuring LC von Hessen, Jonathan Gensler, Anne Wilkins, Xochilt Avila and more. Behind the cover, two kittens are avidly play-fighting. The table of contents for the September 2025 issue of Cosmic Horror Monthly. In the background, a kitten stares up intensely

Our Halloween bingo has been going great this season. So far, these are the best and worst new-to-me flicks I've seen so far. Guess which is which.

I wrote my corporate tragicomedy "The Ones at the Top Didn't Fall There" during @clarionwest.bsky.social 2021 during an apocalyptic heat wave in tech bro-dominated Seattle. I proceeded to revise it for the next four years. Thrilled to see it in print and can't wait to read everyone else's work!

I had the pleasure of reading frequent CHM author D. Matthew Urban's collection, SHAKY PICTURES OF VANISHED FACES. Tight prose and imaginative stories. Highly recommended for fans of weird fiction.

I watched DARK WATER the other night and was pleasantly surprised by its atmosphere, suspense, and surreality.

Any recommendations for other J-Horror flicks I might have missed?

My wife and I get really into Halloween. This year we made bingo cards to change up our yearly viewings. We're drawing categories out of a hat, watching new-to-us horror flicks, and seeing who can get a bingo first!

Recommended for those weirdos who like to go the extra mile!

Clambering aboard the bandwagon to humbly point out that my short story "The Last Spiderbox" in issue #58 of @chmmagazine.bsky.social is a thing an HWA member could read, were they so inclined

I was surprised by how much I enjoyed THE LONG WALK. I've never read the book, but the movie was harrowing and brutal, with beautiful moments of humanity. Great performances throughout.

I didn't think I'd like it, as I was lukewarm on TALK TO ME, but BRING HER BACK was pretty great. Incredible performance from Sally Hawkins that was both terrifying and sad. A tense, suspenseful occult horror flick with some gruesome imagery.

Pictured: the dream.

Any big spooky plans this autumn? Personally, I plan to hit up as many haunted houses and watch as many horror movies as money allows.
