on ACA subsidies democrats benefit from being “the health care party.” poll after poll shows that democrats are more trusted on health care and are perceived as the ones who fight for it. the GOP isn’t going to get credit for saving the ACA or making it more available, even if they did.

the problem with writing actually feasible combat in a science fiction setting is that once you can drop rocks on people from orbit that pretty much obsoletes any kind of land-based warfare unless you engineer some specific technology to enable it (i.e. “a rock-proof but not dropship-proof shield”)

smart or not he’s falling into the same trap that animates the entire postliberal right: they fundamentally don’t believe that anyone organically and authentically holds liberal values. they think these values are being imposed from above and all they have to do is find the source and reprogram it.

i think he also realizes that they’re on a pretty strict timer because 1) once the full force of the economic vandalism hits they’ll be too unpopular to accomplish anything and 2) the only thing holding their coalition together is the health of an extremely unwell old man

most of the remoras attached to trump don’t care about anything beyond social media beefs, taking bribes, and looking good on teevee. miller shows up so much because he is one of like two or three people (vought, RFK) who actually have an agenda of any kind.

i think they’re going to rule that the ieepa does not allow tariffs in a way that basically writes a blueprint for him to re-administer most or all of the same tariffs under, say, s. 233 of the 1962 act

i think that this all presupposes the idea of a “competent trump” who can consolidate power without causing the massive economic and social disruptions that are currently torpedoing trump’s chances at durable authoritarianism. not saying it’s impossible but i don’t think it’s necessarily true.
