It’s going to be a great afternoon. #cubs

Today is the 154th anniversary of the fires in Chicago, Peshtigo, Port Huron and other parts of Michigan (Chicago got all the publicity but it wasn’t the biggest fire that day).

At one point I thought I might go back to Jetbrains for their coding tools but they seem to have even gone deeper on the AI slop than VSCode.

Should I go to the Cubs game tonight or not?

Today’s post is a reflection on a couple of big anniversaries for me, both personally and professionally.

If you're trying to get folks to ditch #bluesky in favor of the fediverse, maybe instead of sending them needlessly complicated explainers, something like this might be useful.

Hey, Bluesky, I see that some of you are thinking about giving the fediverse (which Mastodon is part of) a/another try.

Instead of sharing a yet another complicated "how to get started" guide, here's a bit about who's actually on there.

There is, apparently, no creature in this world that has more to talk about on a daily basis than my cat.

It's been a hot and dry Fall here in Chicago so far. That should be changing, somewhat, today. I’m grateful for the rain and cooler weather, even if it meant I didn’t get to go for my morning walk.

I have a Bluesky account. It's mostly to follow a few folks I really respect that went there instead of here.

The reasons I didn't trust it seem to be proving themselves true at an alarming rate this week.

I'll take it but that stoppage was kinda ridiculous.

Ah. Mona handled me being away for a bit wonderfully. I think this will be my new Mastodon client
chris.mastodon.chriswiegman.com.ap.brid.gy
I'm giving Mona a fresh shot on my Apple devices. If it better handles loading the timeline than Ivory it will be worth it.
chris.mastodon.chriswiegman.com.ap.brid.gy
I find I use Mastodon less these days as the client I use, Ivory, just doesn’t work well. My timeline gets enough posts that it simply takes me loading it and quitting it multiple times (it seems to stall completely after 2 page loads) to catch up if I haven’t looked in an hour or so. Thinking […]

It's almost quitting time and... thank god for it

The one sure way to stop most telemarketers is to ratchet the talk up to 100 right off the bat. I have less than 0 patience for that shit. Rarely ever do I get a 2nd call from any of them anymore and it's worth it.

For the record: I rarely answer an unknown number unless I'm waiting for a call […]

I'm working from my SIL's house today and the St. Bernard is NOT having it. He demands homage and treats and tolerates no other activities.

Apple's native apps (Notes, Reminders, etc) work really well for me... when they work. This year's OSes are so unstable though. For example, I have to unsync my notes from iCloud, open the Notes app and then turn on iCloud syncing again or the whole app crashes... every time.

On top of that I […]

I'm glad Sep is almost over. We've had to upgrade my wardrobe some, replace our washer/dryer, replace our phones and watches, change mobile plans and replace our car. Of all of that only the phones/watches and some of the clothes (as I no longer need to commute every day) were planned. I'm so […]

@phillycodehound Yeah... too much. It just kept going up and up. We had 2 lines, 2 watches and an iPad on it. Now we'll have 2 phones and 2 watches and enough of a hotspot to just use the iPad that way.
chris.mastodon.chriswiegman.com.ap.brid.gy
@phillycodehound Yeah... it's because the new watches are 5G only. Supposedly support is coming, just not a "day 1" feature... Which kinda makes sense for the price. We were up to $225/month with T-Mobile. That's just crazy at that point.
chris.mastodon.chriswiegman.com.ap.brid.gy
Switched phone carriers. Should save us ~$2,000/year. Only catch is it turns out they don't support our watches yet (new 5G Apple watches). Hopefully they fix that. Worst case is we'll give them until the end of the year and look if they don't. At that point we will have given the service a fair […]

@harold Nice! Ours is a bit more complicated. The public spots around here are always packed so charging at home is important but it's a condo and our parking spaces are deeded (it even gets its own property tax bill) so trying to get electric chargers is not a simple thing. Really hoping they […]

@harold Oh nice! We live in a big building so we can’t charge at home yet. They’re talking about changing that so we leased this one. I had a Nissan leaf back in 2013. Would love another electric.
