And, as I found out, CERN's giant experiment is switching to CO2 as a refrigerant in some areas - because it is less damaging as a greenhouse gas than the refrigerants previously in use. The Large Hadron Collider is getting a little bit greener!

Industry sometimes uses even more sensitive detectors that can sense it at parts per billion.

Yes IR detectors can be used for that application.

Yes - I meant, was it the current noise restrictions that meant you had to go into the garden? That's the main reason I've heard for that in the past.
