Earlier this year I directed a short film called ‘Finding Calm’; the story of a first time father struggling with his new role and his mental health.

We’re close to finishing but need a little help getting it across the line. Please do support us if you can:

Interesting to watch this through a modern lens and in the contemporary context of ‘Man V Nature’. Hard not to feel some empathy for the monster as he is punished for base animal instincts that come up against human invasion.

Bela Lugosi appeared in a film with Dora Bryan. Just sharing so that someone else might pull the same mildly confused face as me.

Kicked off my 2025 gothic deep-dive with Bride of Frankenstein, one of my all time favourites. Hadn’t watched it for a while but forgot how rich it was; visually, philosophically, textually.

Aww, I share a birthday with Darth Vader.

Revisited ‘The Mummy’ last night and left wishing the story was strong enough to match the astonishing Jack Pierce make-up. There’s a decent Mummy story still to be told. Maybe I’ll tell it… one day.

Spent a fine evening with James Whale’s camp-gothic masterclass ‘The Invisible Man’.

Forgot there was a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it appearance by Dwight Frye in there as well, and it got me thinking; what’s the earliest example of a cameo?

Kinda stupid that ‘skeet’ took root as a way to refer to posts when ‘bleet’ was right there.

For the uninitiated, here’s a few stills showing what we lost when ‘London After Midnight’ went up in smoke.

7 years ago today I was at Pinewood Studios working on the sound mix for Scraps with the team who had just done Roma for Alfonso Cuarón, and getting a crash course in his mixing method.

Revisiting the fabulous Fisher family.

Spoiler alert: it doesn’t. At all. (Assuming now it was a publicity shot). However this glorious headwear precursor to Leia’s coiled buns does feature prominently.

Watching Tod Browning’s ‘The Mystic’ for the first time tonight, and very excited to see how the hell this costume fits into the plot.

Continued my Tod Browning run with ‘The Unknown’, a macabre tale of unrequited obsession and grim delusion. With a couple of dark plot twists that should rank amongst the greatest in film.

Having a Tod Browning week and excited to dive into this tonight.

Is it me or is a lot of the media giving these vibes right now?

Owning this painting from the final scene of The Addams Family will forever be on my bucket list.

What’s a movie that felt like a fever dream?

The Heart of the World (2000) directed by Guy Maddin.

Very excited to be working with BAFTA nom’d Toby-Alexander Smith on ‘Finding Calm’, a new short shooting in the new year. Will share more on it soon.

Just watched this, and it was wonderful. Sheds light on the pioneers of early animation via the extensive film reel collection of Tommy José Stathes, and makes the case for its urgent preservation.
