He was the last president of Czechoslovakia from 1989-1992 prior to the dissolution of Czechoslovakia on 31 December. He then became the first president of the Czech Republic from 1993 to 2003. Photographed for Freedom House in NYC in 1991.

Yet he also used his time in prison to learn English, hiding his educational materials every time a guard passed his cell. Upon his release he fled to the Burma/Thailand border and helped found the Assistance Association of Political Prisoners.
