Congressional staffers are paid poorly, work long hours, and their professionalism, subject matter knowledge, and work ethic shapes the success or failure of members. The amount of work that goes into preparing a member for a committee hearing alone is exhausting. They deserve better.

That said, a lot of members treat their staffs well, or at least make an effort not to be raging assholes. It irks me when we make excuses for toxic behavior because of they admire that person from afar. I don’t care how “good” they are for the party if they reduce 21 y/o staffers to tears.

I’m never surprised when I learn about allegations of staff mistreatment by current or former members of Congress. It’s an ugly mashup of ego, stress, and attention that melts the brains of some folks. My only comment to young staffers is, you don’t have to put up with it. Don’t normalize abuse.

I have seldom enjoyed watching a ball club at work more than I do the Blue Jays right now. Regardless of how the postseason turns out, I’ll be tuning in next year.

I think I had one module in high school re the Glorious Revolution’s influence on the Founders. Americans’ ability to connect the dots between events in England/Europe and the colonies has always been tenuous at best. Our own revolution as one theater of a global war, being one.
