On the other respiratory viruses, Covid is back at (non-zero) baseline levels while RSV is increasing rapidly. But RSV pattern is pretty similar to recent years. 6/8

But it could be that the whole wave is simply shifted a few weeks earlier so that the peak or overall number of admissions will be in line with previous years.

There is nothing to suggest from this data that the peak will be higher than 2022/23 or 2024/25 or that the decline will be longer. 4/8

I’ve plotted the number of hospital admissions for flu per 100,000 population for each of the last 4 winters, from UKHSA data.

it is immediately apparent that this year is several weeks earlier than normal. 3/8

🧵How much should the NHS worry about this winter's flu wave?

You may have seen this alarming headline on the BBC website today...

I think it's too early to make this claim and the data does not support it.

I think it will be a bad flu season but no evidence to think worse than previous yrs

The US is also what rampant populist authoritarianism looks like

If you fear state retribution for criticising the state, you are not in a free democracy.

the US is what rampant militarised populist nationalism looks like. Don't stop paying attention.

it's the govt briefing this
November 17, 2025 at 11:34 AM
Hey Labour

Remember the majority of voters who believe in treating people decently and not stealing from those who've endured months and years of hardship fleeing war and persecution to seek a place of safety?

We're still over here 👋

Here's a reminder of the 2024 bill
November 16, 2025 at 11:06 PM
Another chilling aspect... The Tories simply passed a law declaring Rwanda "safe".

Do we really trust that this govt or the next won't resort to similar tactics if this finds them politically convenient?

we need to protect both the independent, expert creation of evidence and information *and* the communication of it by independent, non-partisan, media organisations.
