A good effort by Oxfordshire County Council to balance its congestion charge with bus benefits. Sensible to set a short period to see if the arrangement can cover its costs - better than purporting to be able to budget for the long term.

Park & Ride bus journeys will be free when Oxford’s congestion charge comes into effect on 29 October. Holders of P&R parking tickets will be entitled to catch any Stagecoach or Oxford Bus Co service from the sites, not just the P&R-branded ones. news.oxfordshire.gov.uk/free-park-an...

On judges - a thread worth reading

Muting the words "Jenrick" and "Badenoch" cleans up a timeline wonderfully. And you won't miss anything of importance.

More experiments with contrast and colour in photographs of a lapwing flying across the sun
A lapwing - bird with big wings silhouetted against a white sun, with black sky and multicoloured clouds. This has been edited to emphasise the darks and lights. A lapwing against a sky of grey, white, and dark yellow.

It was a coincidence, I'm sure, but our wheelie bin disappeared at about the time of your post to reappear, shamefaced, a while later. I hope you had a happy birthday anyway.

Yesterday's timeline-warming thread was about the rescue of an old bureau and about the things found in it. Today it's the recovery of an injured owl.

Six weeks ago, I picked up a year-old tawny owl with a broken leg off the main road near our home and dropped him off at our nearest vet.

After a few days, I received one of the most bizarre phone calls I’ve ever had, asking “So when are you coming to pick up your owl?” 🧵

Fingers poised to do the washing and ironing in the Octopus electricity free hour.

Memories of years ago, of telephone calls being cheaper after 2:00pm and cheaper still after 6.00pm. That drove habits which it took me years to discard.

Yesterday's lapwing flew overhead across the sun. I nearly ditched the washed-out photographs which resulted, but instead played around with contrast and colour.
A lapwing flying under a clouded sky. It has big wings with black ends and a white body. The clouds are grey and white.

We don't often see lapwings here now, and it is (fortunately) rare for police officers to come here. It was an odd chance to catch both in one photograph this morning.

Bernard Hepton again - the second time I've seen him in a week (the first was as Toby Esterhase in a scene from Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy), conveying more with just his face than most actors manage with words and actions.

We are lacking in pleasing stories now, but this one brightens up the day.

This could be a long and rambling thread. Be patient with me.

I bought an old mahogany bureau on Ebay. I didn't really want a bureau as we're meant to be downsizing, but it was a beautiful piece & obviously very old. Google lens suggests the brass chased handles are Queen Anne. That's 1702-1714 😯

I had been stalking the lapwing for a while, waiting for someone else to put it in the air, and watching the police walk around. A jogger put up the lapwing just as the walkers walked by.

Our Mesh system is outdated and I didn't want to buy new bits for it, nor replace the lot. The VM pods filled the gap as long as we don't mind having two networks.
