Even if much is redacted, the fact that the Gov’t have had to hand over swathes of documents from the Embassy based on private discussions will surely have a chilling effect on peoples’ willingness to talk to our diplomats in the US - and across the world.

Today is the anniversary of the London 2012 OIympics opening ceremony. The final episode of the brilliant Twenty Twelve sitcom, set in the build up to the Games (iPlayer is your friend if you've not seen it), has a plot line revolving around no-one having bought tickets to the women's football.

One of them, Bashar, has been working with AFP since 2010, first as a fixer, then freelance photographer, and since 2024, as lead photographer. On July 19th he managed to post a message on Facebook: “I no longer have the strength to work for the media. My body is thin and I can’t work anymore.”

Along with a few others, they are now the only ones left to report what is happening in the Gaza Strip. The international press has been banned from entering the territory for nearly two years.

We refuse to watch them die.
