On this day 70 years ago, ALFRED HITCHCOCK PRESENTS premiered. The first episode, “Revenge,” stars Vera Miles, whom Hitchcock intended to be his next big star. She is absolutely magnetic in her Hitchcock debut. #Hitchcock #VeraMiles

On this day 66 years ago, THE FBI STORY, starring James Stewart & Vera Miles (a year after they ALMOST started together in Alfred Hitchcock’s VERTIGO), premiered in New York City. During production, Miles met with FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover (photo from @usnatarchives.bsky.social )

Happy birthday, Hitch! Alfred Hitchcock was born on August 13, 1899. The Master of Suspense directed Vera Miles in two films (THE WRONG MAN and PSYCHO) and two television episodes. I wrote extensively about their working relationship in my book about Miles #AlfredHitchcock

Thanks to the Sioux City Journal for sending me a copy of last week’s The Weekender with the cover story on ZZ Top (with an interview with me about my book on the band!) Always love seeing print, but here is the online version: t.co/NZnwpwIi6O #ZZTop #classicrock

A huge THANK YOU to the team at @burnsfilmcenter.bsky.social (especially @mcastimovies.bsky.social who shared these photos) for a wonderful screening of THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALANCE and for supporting my book about Vera Miles! It was a pleasure to answer questions and sign books for the audience

Cheers to Circle Cinema for honoring Oklahoma native Vera Miles in its Walk of Fame (and for providing this photo!) Miles was underappreciated in her career, especially considering her filmography with Alfred Hitchcock, John Ford, and Walt Disney as well as her extensive TV work #VeraMiles

Cheers to Princeton Garden Theatre for inviting me to introduce the June 25 screening of John Ford’s 1962 classic THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALANCE starring James Stewart, John Wayne, and (of course) Vera Miles.

More screenings to be announced soon…

Considering her body of work for Disney as the quintessential “Disney Mom” of the era, Vera Miles is long overdue for recognition as a Disney Legend. Make it happen, Disney! #DisneyLegend

But A TIGER WALKS wasn't Vera Miles's first work with Disney. 14 years earlier on Christmas Day, 1950, Miles appeared uncredited in holiday garb holding a tray of Coca-Cola in Disney's first-ever television production, ONE HOUR IN WONDERLAND (Coke was the program’s sponsor)

A TIGER WALKS, released #OTD 61 years ago (March 12, 1964) was the first of six films that Vera Miles made for Walt Disney Studios. Three of the films were produced during Walt’s lifetime, and he referred to Miles on occasion as “my favorite actress” #WaltDisney #VeraMiles

“Mirror Image,” one of the all-time greatest episodes of THE TWILIGHT ZONE, premiered #OTD 65 years ago (Feb. 26, 1960). Vera Miles stars as a woman who has the strange feeling that a doppelganger is trying to take over her life. Miles only did one episode of #TheTwilightZone, but it’s a classic!
February 26, 2025 at 3:11 PM
Before working with John Ford on THE SEARCHERS, Vera Miles made her film debut in an uncredited role in Ford's WHEN WILLIE COMES MARCHING HOME, released #OTD 75 years ago (Feb. 17, 1950). She stands next to Alan Hale Jr., best known for later playing the Skipper on GILLIGAN'S ISLAND #VeraMiles

I am thrilled to be celebrating this extraordinary actress in my newest book. Cheers to many who contributed, including @talkinghitchpod.bsky.social, and especially Lee Sobel for making it all happen. #VeraMiles #Hitchcock #ClassicFilm

Miles would go on to appear in nearly 200 television shows, including The Twilight Zone, Columbo, The Fugitive, and Ironside, as well as six Disney films. She would star alongside John Wayne, Bob Hope, and James Stewart―and would receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame
February 17, 2025 at 2:22 PM
However, Miles was forced to step away from the leading role in Hitchcock’s 1958 film “Vertigo.”

Still, Miles's illustrious film and television career spanned nearly fifty years in Hollywood, and yet she is still considered one of the most unsung film actresses of her era.

Vera Miles appeared in three of the most critically-acclaimed films of all time—“The Searchers” (1956), “Psycho” (1960), and “The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance” (1962)—and was signed to an exclusive personal contract by Alfred Hitchcock, who intended to make her his next big star.
