It held France back a lot when it came to start using the internet. Not only were people inordinately proud of it, but the telecoms companies had invested in the wrong sort of infrastructure and were reluctant to change.

We went to Bruges and Ghent Xmas markets last year and both really suffered from sore knees as a result - huge amount of cobbles. Didn't enjoy it as much as we'd hoped, there seemed to be a lot of drunken UK coach parties!

I worked at the Norbreck Castle Hotel in Blackpool as a night porter one summer and had to take turns manning the manual lift. I too was very Zen about hitting the floor level spot-on.
