After shooting weddings for 15 years I find myself in my mid-40's and wondering if there's a career in archaeology/heritage I can carve out for myself. If any archaeologists or archaeological society have any digs, projects or workshops going on this summer that they'd like photographing, shout up!

How the old OS maps shortened 'Methodist Chapel' always makes me chuckle.

I'm starting to book shows for The Buildings Archaeologist book tour. Currently, looking for dates from 4 July 2026 onwards. Festival of Archaeology, Heritage Open Days, fringe festivals, history festivals, book festivals or special one-off's... Happy to look at all reasonable offers 🙂🏠🏰🕍✒️🚂

Thanks for the link. Will give that a read. I've been in touch with our county archaeologist to let him know what I'm upto and to make sure I know how we can best help him with whatever fieldwork we manage to do.

That's a good shout. I'm meeting with our FLO next week so I'll pick her brains about it. Cheers!

Saw that on the big screen in Grantham today! Looked fab! 😊

I joined our county archaeological society earlier this year hoping (somewhat naively maybe) to have opportunities for fieldwork. I'm now trying to bring back some level of practical archaeology to their programme, which will hopefully attract in new members. Wish me luck! 🤞

Good to know. Soon as we've sorted out landowner permission on a site, we'll be getting the word out! 🤞

Had a brilliant day at the CBA-East Midlands fieldwalking conference in Grantham. My head is chokka with information & ideas to take forward into efforts to get our county archaeological society doing fieldwork again. A really inspiring event! #archaeology #fieldwalking

A friend of mine runs a photo lab in Nottingham, and he said he used to process b&w film from the Leicester unit. He doesn't anymore, but they might still shoot film of sites.

Cheers, Martyn. They'll join the ever growing pile of landscape books I'm gleefully working my way through 📚

But do they have beds in the bedrooms??

A pretty successful birthday book-day yesterday! #landscape #landscapearchaeology #archaeology

Popped along to Wollaton Park yesterday to see what Laura from @yorkarchaeology.bsky.social and her merry band of Nottingham Uni archaeology students were upto. Somehow I managed to time my visit with the traditional 'Posh Lunch' day to celebrate the end of the dig! Hurrah! #archaeology
A group of students wearing orange high-vis vests gathered around a table eating a buffet lunch A blue tub with wooden handles poking out sat on grass with a muddy knee pad in front of it A wipe-board leaning against the side of a van with a list of song titles relating to 'Africa' with a hot water urn and a mug in the foreground. Two students wearing orange high-vis vests working on an archaeological drawing of the site. One is holding the board and drawing with a pencil whilst the other is pointing at the board.

My incredibly talented sister (@gemseddon.bsky.social) shared this incredibly brilliant letter by Kurt Vonnegut. Important things for us all to practice, remember, and to share with others!

I did think about stopping everyone whilst I got my telephoto lens out so I could really get in close to the hillfort. But it wouldn't have done my "unobtrusive coverage" credentials any good!
chrisseddon.bsky.social
Following on from last week's "It's not a hillfort but should be" post for #HillfortsWednesday, here's another tenuous one, where I just managed to squeeze Fosbury Camp hillfort in #Wiltshire into this photo from a recent wedding. #archaeology

📷 My own
A rutted track across a field with a bride and groom walking along it with their wedding party behind them. In the middle distance are some trees, and in the distance on the left side is Fosbury Camp hillfort.

Think I had a few choice words with it when I was trying to choose my seat!
chrisseddon.bsky.social
No worries. Now that means there'll be at least one person I "know" who's going!
chrisseddon.bsky.social
I haven't. Off to have a nosey now!

Is knitting and crochet big in archaeology circles then? I'll have to borrow some of my mum's knitting needles!

Quite excited to hear that tickets for Derbyshire Archaeology Day 2026 are now available! My archaeology quest/dream/thingy began just after the event this year, so really looking forward to attending my first one next year!
