While his murder is tragic for his family, and for the nation, we should not pretend he wasn't the destructive, backward looking force that he was.

Reminds me of a sticker on our refrigerator, "Make stupid embarrassing again!"

I don't agree. Kirk presented himself as a debater, which should be a part of healthy democratic discourse, but he promoted the intimidation and worse for those with whom he disagreed. Running a professor watch list that allowed, even encouraged threats and attacks, isn't the "right" way.

Joyce - WB Yeats has the answer:
"Turning and turning in the widening gyre..."
We know what "rough beast" now slouches toward us.

Ali, I loved your opening intro to the segment about the weak fighter instinct within the leadership of the Democrats. The public may need to move past them by forming its own non-party pro-democracy coalition - perhaps that will finally get them into the ring.

Nicolle, we love your work (and you), and your stated mission for Deadline WH, "Bending the arc towards democracy." We would love to see a long-term, robust segment devoted to the question, "What kind of government do "we" want," for all pro small d democrats. Our current structure is failing us.

Justin - I watched your conversation on The Ink, which was informative and provocative. Honestly mentioning that you are considering what your current and future role should be was brilliantly refreshing. Keep up the great work, and being an honest explainer of our situation.

Great segment. Both guests confirm that what will be necessary is for those of us protesting Trumpism to eventually (and not too slowly!!) build a positive movement that will crush and replace Trumpism.

Those should also be the foundations for a large pro-democracy movement that pushes the Democrats (as well as independents and the handful of Republicans who still have a functioning moral compass) into advocating for what people really need rather than tweaking the neoliberal order on the margins.

The senator is correct - we know obscenity when we see it. The only question is whether the majority of voters will see it and know it.

Dear Joyce, your incidental typo, "Descent" instead of "Dissent" says a whole lot. Our governmental structures are in a state of descent towards who knows where, but for certain, it is a unholy place.

May her torment over her indifference be long.

Hypocrisy is their stock and trade. Our democracy is failing because the voters do not punish them.

Pablo Torres just made a brilliant observation: "With Bukele sitting next to Trump who claims that he is EXPORTING our problems to El Salvador, it is obvious that we are IMPORTING the values of the 'coolest dictator'"

Madisonian democracy is inherently inefficient. Good government is Effective, Transparent and Accountable. Our democracy is endangered because our citizens have dropped the ball, at least partially enabled by disinformation and by lack of civics education. We need a pro-democracy movement!

Symone, you are so right! The confusion over the word "Oligarchy" misses the point. If we citizens cannot devote even 10 minutes to thinking about what it means to have a real democracy, and how damaging oligarchy is, we have lost the battle. Not to say that leaders need to better craft messaging.
March 22, 2025 at 4:09 PM
You are preaching to the choir, sir. Please gather the few other inspired Dems and any independents with a voice, and present a coherent, coordinated plan of resistance. If the Dem party is still "frozen" (which is how it appears) your leadership with others will drag them along.
March 20, 2025 at 5:04 PM
They told us this was the intent. We need for the Dems to provide leadership that includes an alternative vision for what the federal budget COULD and SHOULD be.

Why not present a balanced budget that raises taxes on the oligarchs and moves median households to zero tax? I know it's possible.
