He's had regressions of other skills as well, this is just the easiest one to define, so it's the one I chose to use as an example. You seem to be in the "this isn't my experience, so it's not real" camp. It's so sad when other autistics are just as ableist as TDPs.

He will be turning 19 in less than a month. "Situational mutism" doesn't last 18 years. I've experienced situational mutism myself, as I needed time to process. It's lasted days or weeks. I could even believe it could last months, but 18 years? 1/2

Other neurological problems can cause regressions too, such as seizures, strokes and brain tumors, so how can you possibly say "'regression' isn't a thing?"

If not "regression", then what do you call it when a child with a 50+ word vocabulary stops talking. Regressive autism is a type of autism that causes children to lose skills they've already learned. It's more common in boys than girls, and disproportionately affects boys with down syndrome.

As a society, we need to stop pretending that autism is ALWAYS crippling, but we still need to accept that sometimes it is.

My mother, myself, and my eldest child are also autistic, but we all have IQs over 140, are verbal, and capable of holding a job and living mostly normal lives, with a few hiccups from missed social cues or sensory processing difficulties. For us, it is not crippling, but for David, it very much is.

For some it is. My youngest child has down syndrome, cerebral palsy and autism. He had a 50+ word vocabulary and was starting to string together short phrases and sentences (pretty good for a kid with DS) when he had his first regression at 10-11 months old. Since then he is mostly non-verbal.

Yep, it was my fellow genxers that were the cause of this fiasco. We're also the generation with the most "Karens", but the boomers seem to always get the blame for that too.
