Maybe it was the owner's daughter's birthday that morning and the owner -- a truly gifted baker -- made a two-layer chocolate cake with buttercream icing, but they're flying coach-class to Thailand in the afternoon so they left half that cake behind.

Am I making this up, or was Lily King part of our original #sundaysentence community back on twitter? I feel like i’m not making that up.

Back to Graham Greene again for my #sundaysentence this week: "Writing is a form of therapy; sometimes I wonder how all those who do not write, compose, or paint can manage to escape the madness, the melancholia, the panic fear which is inherent in the human situation."

I’m talking like an expert here but in fact last time i ate puffballs was as a kid. Was a family hobby, mushrooms. The only wilds i’m comfortable IDing and eating these days are chanterelles (which are amazing)

You don’t want puffballs when they’re in their explosive stage, of course. But when they’re still solid, slice em like a loaf of bread, egg bath em, and saute.

Felt good to play it out last night. Usually just sits in the corner these days. But even an imperfect instrument can just feel right in your hands.

This guitar came into my care in early 1987 or late 1986; it wasn’t new, but photos confirm fairly unblemished. I’ve had my way with her.

The marks of 30+ years of playing on what is now the beach #guitar; I find them beautiful, like weathered lines on a sailor’s face. (Long way to go to get to Willie level on the patina, though.)

Death and destruction dogs thee at thy heels;
Thy mother’s name is ominous to children.

Me too! And that word, afflicted. Too funny.

Sometimes you run across one short sentence that manages to capture a whole person. My #sundaysentence this week is this simple & funny beauty that captures so much of Graham Greene: “While in Villahermosa, Greene was afflicted with the company of an American dentist.”

O, pity, God, this miserable age!
What stratagems! How fell! How butcherly!
