By firing Kimmel, Disney did the opposite: It damaged its own financial interests in order to placate Trump. When appeasing a president outweighs a company’s bottom line, its programming choices, and its freedom to operate, we’ve entered uncharted territory in U.S. history.

By contrast, “Star Wars” books continued after Wendig’s firing. “The Mandalorian” didn’t skip a beat after Carano’s firing. Seven seasons and 112 episodes of “The Conners” aired after Roseanne was fired. Firing them protected Disney’s investments in these IPs.

Disney’s invested a fortune in Kimmel since his show debuted 22 years ago in 2003. He hosts “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?” He’s hosted the Oscars four times. Even if linear late night TV bites it, there always could have been Disney+ for him. He is a massive Disney investment.

Unlike the Roseanne, Carano, and Wendig firings, Disney is actively harming its own financial interests this time. Maybe late-night is irrevocably in decline, but they still will be paying him up to $16 million a year through his contract expiring next year.

Kimmel is different, and it’s not just the clear cause-and-effect of Brendan Carr and Trump calling for his ouster — It's Disney working against its own business interests. My piece for @indiewire.com featuring sharp remarks from Poynter's Kelly McBride.

Jane Fonda gave @indiewire.com a statement about Redford: “It hit me hard this morning when I read that Bob was gone. I can’t stop crying. He meant a lot to me and was a beautiful person in every way. He stood for an America we have to keep fighting for.”

Robert Redford. Struggling to think of an actor who gave more performances that stir my soul. And by creating Sundance, he leaves an infrastructure and a model for supporting artist-led filmmaking that's needed now more than ever. Quite a legacy.

Before tonight, Seth Rogen had been nominated for five #Emmys in previous years and never won. Now he's won three just tonight (Best Actor, Best Directing, and Best Writing in a Comedy), with a possible Best Comedy Series win still to come.

I did not have Kathy Bates and Alan Cumming referencing their outstanding work in the Rob Marshall-directed "Annie" TV movie from the late '90s on my #Emmys bingo card!

Loved talking to Scott Shooman, head of IFC Entertainment Group, about the extraordinary early response to what's shaping up to be one of the most anticipated movies of the fall: "Good Boy," a PG-13 horror movie told entirely from a dog's point of view.

IndieWire spoke w/me on end of Corporation for Public Broadcasting. I noted public media outlets are still fighting to stay in operation and that federal funding gave every American a stake in public media, whether or not they donate. https://loom.ly/ddT9SU0

They say Gen-Z doesn't care about movie theaters. Well, she's proving them wrong.

The Beach Theatre is personally meaningful in my life as well — it's where I saw my first-ever subtitled foreign-language movie when I was 10. So happy it lives again.

As Jack Black put it in his Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction for Ozzy Osbourne last year, these things might not have been at odds: “He teamed up with his family to create another genre, reality TV,” Black said. “Maybe the most evil thing he ever did.”
