A wonderful snow day here in NYC, where I am seeing out the rest of 2025. Wishing the best to you all and your loved ones. And here’s to hoping for good news in 2026, if not before.

If you want to learn more about the Donbas – before and after Russia's invasion, about its people, culture, towns, mines and even sparkling wine – check out my book, The War Came To Us. It moves from Bakhmut, where I lived in 2010, through the end of the first year of the full-scale war 2022.

Totally surreal Mad Max shit. This is Russian forces entering Pokrovsk on the E50 highway under cover of fog. 🎥 Video from Telegram.

How are they able to do this? In large part because of their manpower advantage. Read @fabricedeprez.bsky.social’s story about that here: www.ft.com/content/ebdf...

Stopped by the @financialtimes.com mothership in London this week and spotted our recent award for our investigative documentary film published earlier this year about Russia’s executions of Ukrainian soldiers.

Awful news. Olena Hubanova and Yevhen Karmazin, Ukrainian journalists working for TV channel Freedom, were killed in a Russian Lancet drone attack in Kramatorsk, according to the city’s mayor and local media reports.

This makes three deaths of journalists in eastern Ukraine just this month.

Another hellish night in Ukraine. The air force said Russia launched 28 ballistic and cruise missiles and 405 drones predominantly aimed at critical infrastructure. But at least seven people were killed by strikes on residential building. on.ft.com/47l1SLk

Zelensky clearly annoyed with Steve Witkoff, who views the war as some sort of real estate transaction & pushes Kremlin talking points. Recently he pushed Kyiv to accept Putin's demand for the rest of the Donbas because "it was incorporated into [Russia's] constitution."

A Chinese cargo ship visited the occupied port of Sevastopol in Crimea, under sanctions since 2014 — faking its route and making an unprecedented series of stops by a major foreign vessel to one of the Ukrainian ports seized by Russia.

Workers in Kyiv are still cleaning up and repairing damage to several buildings in my neighborhood after Russia’s August 28th massive missile and drone attack on the Ukrainian capital. But many of the businesses damaged have reopened.

Historic selfie. Ukraine’s government leadership always visit the sites of Russia’s drone and missile attacks. Today Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko just had to walk down the hall. This is the cabinet of ministers building in central Kyiv after the biggest Russian drone attack of the war.

Exciting day for Ukraine, as Kyivstar, Ukraine's leading telecoms company, rings the opening bell at Nasdaq and becomes the only Ukrainian company listed on a US stock exchange. Ukrainian PM Yulia Svyrydenko and head of the presidential office Andriy Yermak were in attendance for the moment.

The mood among Zelensky & his inner circle in Kyiv is “tense” as the summit unfolds 5,000 miles away. Top aides to the Ukrainian leader tell me they're concerned about being sidelined from a talk that could impact Ukraine's future.

First poll numbers for Ukraine's and Zelensky's new prime minister, Yulia Svyrydenko aren't good. Only ~42% of Ukrainians know who she is and among them only 11% of respondents trust her; 19% say they do not trust her, ~13% unsure. – KIIS
