It's sometimes fairly obvious that they have come from the author's current or former colleagues, not looking at anyone in particular @jonnelledge.bsky.social (still bought the book).

On #2, yes they did because Kowloon and HK island without the New Territories wouldn't be viable. Plus China could have taken it back by force within about 48 hours.

Disappointed with the analysis on Hong Kong. The reality is that China could have retaken HK at any time, and it's now clear that they had a long-term plan to walk back "one country, two systems" regardless of what was agreed in 1984. And it took the UK government far too long to offer the BNO visa.

Likewise, the Hong Kong MTR is often described as a property company that also runs trains. Very similar business model of residential and commercial property above and alongside rail tracks and stations. The result is much lower fares than London and generally a better train service.

All the text is available in a Large Print paper version that you can borrow, but it's mostly too dark in the room to read it, and weirdly they don't number the exhibits so it's not easy to follow along. It's also on the website so you can read it on your phone if you really want to annoy everyone.

It's not even called the TPP. That was the previous version with the USA. It's the CPTPP - Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership
