It was great speaking with Brandon again at @frnclassics.bsky.social. Black Legion (1937) is an incredibly prescient film today. It has managed to become even more relevant since we recorded this episode.

A number of members were convicted in the 1936 murder of labor organizer Charles Poole - the media coverage being a likely impetus for the Warner Bros. film.

The real Black Legion was extremely violent, known to have killed dozens of people, and opposed Catholics, Jews, Blacks, all immigrants, unions, and anyone not in their inner circle.

It's worth pointing out that Philip Dunne's family has reached out to thank me for this historical corrective from the majority of CFA coverage so far. It's a reminder that history we write about lives on in the subject's families, which is why accuracy of generation's old history remains essential.
