Lyonel Feininger, 'Uprising' (1910)
https://www.moma.org/collection/works/79302 : Lyonel Feininger's painting presents insurrectionaries pouring onto the streets of a small French village. The motley band of characters includes a clown, a portly bohemian, elegant ladies, and historically clad characters trailing a cabaret singer, who appears in the lower right corner. A dandy jauntily sidesteps his way into the picture, elbowing a brilliantly colored and grotesquely elongated man who bears a pitchfork topped with a red flag. Faceless men in top hats march along a blank gray wall, which further constricts the narrow space and creates a diagonal that serves to focus the direction of the procession. Feininger emphasizes the movement of the crowd, giving no hint of their goal. The incongruous juxtapositions, including startling differences in scale and clashes of garish colors, recall Feininger's earlier work as a caricaturist and comic-strip illustrator. He based this painting on sketches he made while living in Paris from 1906 to 1908 and on a drawing from 1909 now in the Museum's collection. The EU and Canada etc. still represent modern rationality: "the rule of law" and liberal statehood in an international order. The anarcho-fascists want to destroy all order and, like the gravediggers of the USSR, to amass as much wealth as possible for themselves in the course of its downfall.

It's about destroying any modern order. Here we need to move away from moralism and schematic thinking such as authoritarians-vs-liberals, which is hard for those who rightly detest Putin and his propaganda. It's telling that the Trump clique hates not only China but perhaps even more so the EU:

Although comparing Trump, Musk, Thiel & Co. with the Nazis and with earlier U.S. white supremacists is crucial, another comparison may also be illuminating: that with the oligarchic-authoritarian destruction of the USSR.

Perhaps we can understand the appalling spectacle as anarcho-fascist?

Oldie but goodie

Heinrich Vogeler, 'Peasant woman in the vineyard of the Karl Marx Kolkhoz in Gnadenburg' (1940)
"The last stop on his journey through the North Caucasus in autumn 1940 took Vogeler to the German ‘Karl Marx Kolkhoz’ in Gnadenburg (now Vinogradnoye). It had been founded in 1933 in the German colony that had existed since the end of the 19th century. Vogeler painted pictures of the wheat harvest there: of the work in the fields (‘Harvest in Kabardino-Balkaria’, A III 298) and the communal break (‘Threshers' Lunch Break’, A III 299). He also depicted the grape harvest in several paintings. Two works of peasant women in the vineyard have been preserved in his estate, one of which is a half-portrait of a woman holding an apron filled with grapes (‘Peasant Woman in the Vineyard of the Karl Marx Kolkhoz in Gnadenburg’, A III 296). For the second painting, Vogeler chose a larger, almost stage-like section showing several women cheerfully and energetically harvesting grapes (‘Women harvesting grapes at the Karl Marx collective farm in Gnadenburg’, A III 295). Eugen Bracht, 'Lunch break' (1907)
Eugen Bracht's large-format painting ‘Mittagspause’ (Lunch Break, 1907) is charged with a magical realism that is oriented towards everyday working life. The Hoesch iron and steelworks (in Dortmund) rises up as a dominant architectural feature, but is flanked by horse-drawn carts and steam locomotives, so that the steelworks is once again placed in its position within the industrial production complex – the economic order. Women are on their way to bring their husbands their lunch. Their shawls identify them as migrants from Masuria. This gives the imposing picture a socio-cultural component. Hokusai, 'The laughing demoness (Warai Hannya)' <from the series "One Hundred Ghost Tales (Hyaku monogatari)" (1831-2)

This image references the legend of Kishimojin, a goddess from early Buddhism known in Sanskrit as Hariti. Originally, this goddess was a terri-fying ogress who was determined to eat all of the babies in the town of Rajgir, India. The Buddha heard the pleas of the townspeople and hid one of Hariti’s own children, leading her to understand the grief she had caused. She then converted to Buddhism and was eventually accepted as a goddess and a protector of children. The Art Institute’s collection boasts one of the most well-preserved and appreciated editions of Katsushika Hok usa i’s One Hundred Ghost Tales series (1831–32). The artist apparently planned to produce a full hundred images, but the series was not completed and only five prints are known. The title refers to a game in which people would gather at night to tell scary stories, putting out a candle after each tale until the room was completely dark. These small-format works feature a bright-blue color made possible by Berlin blue pigment (often called “Prussian blue”), which had become affordable shortly before their production. Although this hue may seem cheery to us, Hokusai’s original audience would have associated it with death and the occult."
