My kid’s (who is 8) junior soccer league ranks and evaluates every player then has “draft day” where the coaches draft players onto their team 🥴 You don’t find a whole lot that is “chill” about this city!

We at the CUNY Institute of Demographic Research (CIDR) are saddened to share the news that Professor Andrew Beveridge passed away on 10 April 2025, in Washington DC. Andy was a social demographer well known for his expertise on New York and U.S. demographic patterns and trends. 1/

It was older and very white, which is noticeable in NYC. We were leaving the subway station and the guys behind us said the last time they protested was during the Vietnam War in college

In addition to their massive endowment, Columbia would also owe $180 million *annually* in property taxes (as the biggest private landowners in NYC) if they weren’t exempt. I understand there are restrictions / can’t just liquidate assets, but still stunned that they folded over $400 million

As title suggests, this paper aims to move beyond scale ("big landlord" "mom-and-pop landlord") to provide more theoretical specificity, precision in understanding landlord variation.

While regulation is often based on scale, no reason to assume small landlords are less likely to discriminate.

I was part of the panel that discussed rental assistance! Recommendations were made during perhaps more optimistic times, but still proud of the discussions generated through the event. @cuny.bsky.social

BHHI Director @mkushel.bsky.social was one of 25 scholars tackling big housing challenges at HUD’s Next Generation of Housing Policy roundtable. Grateful HUD is leaning on evidence-based research to craft real, innovative solutions for the nation’s housing needs. 👏

we found our unit through streeteasy last year; all broker did was open door for us, pocketed one month rent. if landlords do not want to do showings, they can hire property managers like everyone else in the US!
