Genuinely bizarre for Who’s big co-production deal to lead to an episode set entirely in a barbershop which looks cheaper than any other episode made post-2010. Series 5 making Engine would have dressed up a Cardiff barbers and included a line about the terrible weather in Lagos this time of year.

And in that sense of danger, the Doctor and Martha become whole as characters and the world feels real. Space Babies is essentially just a funny visual in the crew and a walking pun in the Bogeyman, and the Doctor and Ruby are written accordingly - basically sleepwalking through it all unaffected.

People often say something is missing from RTD2 and I’d say it’s the regular sense of threat. Perhaps it’s nostalgia speaking, but I don’t think Smith & Jones would feel like a poor season opener today. But that goofy romp had regular reminders that everyone could die horribly.
