I'm sure there's some songs I'm forgetting, and there's definitely covers, unreleased songs, and other things I didn't think fit this list, but there is beauty even in imperfect things. I hope even one of these tracks becomes your new favourite, and I wish you a wonderful and loving 2026!!! 🎇

Furui Riho never really misses, but this song is a slam-dunk. Warm, energetic, celebratory, and optimistic, this song was the perfect opening to CITY as a series. That piano glissando alone is iconic to me, and will likely never leave my brain.

The ending theme to one of the best thing to come out of animation, "LUCKY" has a sound both celebratory and nostalgic. Whoever did the arrangement for this song, especially the flutes, deserves a medal, and is responsible for me having this on repeat so much too...

In the category 'stuck on repeat', Hoshimachi Suisei's music was really the best thing to come out of Gundam GQUUUUUUX by a long shot (rant for another time). Suisei's always been on the more bold edge of Jpop, so hearing this straightforward a jam was a pleasant surprise!

Ado is far and away the artist I listened to the most this year. Any of her singles could've been chosen here, but I think "ROCKSTAR" takes the cake for the live performance of it (and "Charles" being a cover...) Great showcase of her wonderful voice, and great modulations.

I've already talked about this song on the Mini Trees album post, but it bears repeating how much I like it. "On Repeat" embodies many things I love about alternative/indie pop, and manages to be catchy and dreamy without being too cliché. Overall wonderful album and track!

Kaze's latest record wasn't all I hoped it would be, but I guess any follow-up would've been disappointing after that masterwork of a second album. That said, there are still great songs on there, like "I need U back"; A nostalgia-soaked banger of a song!

"FOCUS" was the track that introduced me to kira, and what an introduction it was! Going half-time in the chorus is always a bold move, and it works wonderfully here as a sort-of word-painting technique. Masterful production and a great song.

I wasn't familiar with Louve before this, but my *lord* is this collaboration with L'Impératrice a banger!!! "Chrysalis" is all the neo-disco you would want in one dreamy, futuristic package. I would kill to be able to write a bass line half this good, and those guitars...

It was "Birdbrain" or "Square Up", but only the former's in TIDAL, so...
The closest thing we've had to a 'song of the summer', in my opinion. Catchy, funny, and deeply human, "Birdbrain" is everything I love about Jamie Paige's songwriting and then some!!!

To kick off, perhaps the most beautiful song I've heard this year; 'Jane Doe' by Hikaru Utada and Kenshi Yonezu. When this was played over the credits to the Chainsaw Man movie, I was floored! This is truly the best modern Jpop has to offer in so many ways. Shoutout 6/8.

great string arrangements, and Ohashi's stellar vocals overtop it all! That's not to say this album's just ballads; Closing track ”Sugao No Mamade” alone proves that much! I truly love this record, so please do check it out!

While I have less personal connection to them, the B-sides of the singles from this album, as well as the B-sides album "Flashbacks", are both incredibly good and worthwhile companions to the album!

The second album by the band, "The Great Pretenders" sees them branching out to a more poppy, even accessible sound. Don't get me wrong, songs like "Death is a Girl" are not at risk of seeing much radio play, but the catchy bassline and drum groove are far from out there. "Fantasy" is another-
