Guardian Tales did the funniest thing a gacha game could do: It made the best character an NPC.

I relate to him so much, I wish I could give him a hug.

He doesn't even have any lines but he somehow got me to laugh out loud.

About the deal with Nicalis, he does apparently get some kind of royalties, but ideally I would hope that Nicalis goes under and the Cave Story rights revert to Pixel.

I beat Soulstice:

A fun action game that wears its influences on its sleeve, but its combat mechanics are unique enough to be interesting as its own thing. Art direction fits the edgy fantasy vibe well, and Stephanie Joosten did so well as the two leads that I thought they were different actresses.

Knight's Try is a cute low-poly rage platformer that you can plug midis into for your own soundtrack. It's difficult, but I love the charm.

I just beat Bakeru (2024, PC)

It's a very charming platformer action game where you go through a fantasy/modern Japan. The levels are each loosely based on a real Japanese prefecture, and the two main collectables are souvenirs and fun facts. It sort of feels like a tour! I def recommend it!

Finally finished ".hack//SIGN". The ur-"trapped in MMO" anime. Despite being the beginning of that subgenre, there's almost no 'gameplay', but the dialogue more than makes up for it. I love that it explores the early Internet as a separate layer of expression from reality. OST kicks ass too.

Bakeru, mail theft is illegal.

Bakeru, that's not a souvenir, that's a live animal.

Grabbed this on the steam sale, it looks goofy. People say it's like the Goemon games, though I only played one of the N64 games a bit as a kid, so I don't know much about that. I love how full of Japanese trivia and knick-knacks this game is, though!

I played Interactivity: The Interactive Experience (2019)

It's an extremely short little game about trying to push a button. Despite it's brevity, it also feels a bit repetitive, though. I got it in a huge bundle, but normally it's $4 (on sale for $1 now).
