Hi to all who are new here - as I‘m still figuring out how to use this platform, so much is certain: you‘ll mostly find research and well-informed opinions on legal aspects of trade, sustainable development, and democracy here. And pictures of mountains. And dogs. 🐶

"Falling Far and Fast"

Yale Law’s ROBERT POST — one of the nation’s foremost experts on freedom of speech — has been teaching First Amendment law for more than 40 years.

For the first time, he fears that freedom of speech in America is truly endangered.

The interesting question is also what qualifies as „controversial view“ - since even stating mere facts might be considered a „controversial view“. Press also needs to get this straight.

I feel really bad for my fellow professors. They are working in an autocracy, and this is what happens.

There is no wide open job market to escape to. They are stuck in this madness.

very interesting – by experts, do you also include academics, or 'just' the earlier mentioned technocrats? and in both cases, I wonder whether it would not actually result in a systemic change of their role if they became public figures, given that their traditional role is one in the background...

Security policy is not my specialty. To understand better, I went to an event about the role of Europe in Swiss security policy: In essence, the panel held that we are not witnessing the transition to a multipolar world, but the global battle between democracy and autocracy. What if that’s true?! 🤯

Breaking News: A federal appeals court ruled that many of President Trump’s most punishing tariffs are illegal. But the judges delayed the implementation of their order until October to grant the administration time to seek review by the Supreme Court.
Appeals Court Rules Against Many Trump Tariffs
The decision is a big blow to President Trump’s trade policies, but the judges left the duties in place for now to allow time for a likely appeal to the Supreme Court.

For me, the confirmation that climate mitigation must comply with sustainable development is just as central as the fact that states have individual obligations of ambitious climate mitigation measures under customary international law.

... although it is really difficult to tell whether – given the impossible circumstances – MS and MEPs are not actually hiding behind the commission in order not to be blamed should things go South. Commission cannot ratify & implement this deal alone – checks & balances are still there.

not sure I agree that this is an example in which the EU is making European states weaker in trade negotiations… there are substantial disagreements between the parties as it seems now - but the European view of this „deal“ is much more than I expect Switzerland to achieve…

The EU-US trade deal is here - it's probably not the end of uncertainty as the details are ironed out, but it's a momentous deal. In sum, it's a political defeat for the EU, but in economic terms I see it as, under the circumstances, a win of sorts. 🧵

The International Court of Justice climate judgement was – in many ways – better than expected. Here are 11 takeaways about what ICJ judgement and what it means for the protection of the climate:

genuinely curious: how will a donation make any difference, if there is no food, drinking water or medical treatment available that you could buy for yourself and your family? Not even the big international aid organizations have access to Gaza right now- how can money change your fate?

just a tiny update here: Ramallah has been spared from a rockets so far and supply is still working. However, no way to get out. Our friends have to sit tight for the time being, together with their little kids, and despite having a Dutch passport.
