THE MUSIC MAN (1962): One of the most deranged Best Picture nominees I've ever seen. Takes the inherent unreality of a stage musical, puts it on gorgeous Technicolor film, and dares you to complain about how "people don't just sing and dance like that" with a big ol' smile.

I adored it.

MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY (1962): Beautiful, but bad!

Worth noting here, it's the final film of Lewis Milestone, whose early film THE RACKET was a Best Picture nominee at the very first Academy Awards back in 1928. Neat to have seen the bookends to his career, call it a Milestone milestone 😋

Finished out 1961, the year of WEST SIDE STORY'S extremely deserved win. BUT, it's a kind of banger year of nominees (except for one, not pictured): a steamy pool-shooting character drama, an anti-fascist courtroom epic, and a proto MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE war adventure!
