Worked on this piece about @widespreadpanic.com on and off for a year, and it's not a piece about music. It's a piece about music fans, and how this band has built a world for them that's stood for nearly 40 years.
A Place to Be Happy
Chuck Reece explores Widespread Panic, the devotion of its fans, and the enduring community built on joy, kinship, and sharing.

@eafentress.bsky.social took what, in most writers’ hands, would have been a reflection on an artist’s career and turned it into inspiration for anyone in midlife who is driven to create. Proud to publish this in @salvationsouth.com.

On the liturgical calendar of The Episcopal Church, May 13th is the feast day for Blessed Frances Perkins, the woman who served as the Secretary of Labor in FDR's cabinet and who envisioned and personally drafted much of the legislation to create such New Deal programs as Social Security,

"Change came like a tsunami—which, contrary to what many people think, does not always announce itself with a mighty roar, but seeps in under the door when you aren’t looking."

Just a quick note to thank @chuckreece.bsky.social and @salvationsouth.com for their Salvation South podcast. As someone born in Texas who thought he knew abt. the South till he lived in Mobile for 7 years, starting listening to these short pieces today was like eating some really good hopping john.

Tracy Thompson's writing and research are important. Her book "The New Mind of the South" felt like a great awakening to me. So I'm proud @salvationsouth.com today gets to publish her new piece about the grief you feel when your home literally disappears.

Yesterday, across from Ebenezer Baptist Church—just days before MLK Day, when crowds will gather to honor justice and equality—a homeless man was killed during an encampment sweep by an Atlanta city vehicle.

These sweeps are cruel, brutal, and utterly counterproductive in addressing homelessness.
