This about something that happened to (among others) the wife of my classmate and brother-in-arms Seth Nieman, herself a distinguished soldier who gave 24 years of service to her country. Please read

The literal reading of this statement is Pam Bondi is planning extrajudicial executions of random protesters.

My gosh. After the US bombed multiple boats in the middle of the ocean, murdering people on grounds that they were allegedly "carrying drugs," the US Attorney General says "Just like we did with cartels, we're going to take the same approach, President Trump, with Antifa."

Which doesnt *itself* mean there was Sadducee involvement! The Romans typically brought a legion down to Jerusalem for Passover so it could have been a centurion noticing someone making trouble at a sensitive time.
chugachmtnblues.bsky.social
Yes, I and most scholars don’t think the Romans think he was executed *because* of the Temple incident, just that it may have been what got him On their radar in the first place
chugachmtnblues.bsky.social
yes, actually—because the passover was a chaotic and hectic time in which far more Jews were congregated in one place than normal than usual and the Romans were especially watchful of disorder. Britain was the same way during the various spring holidays in Mandatory Palestine.
chugachmtnblues.bsky.social
And I don’t think that the Romans needed much *convincing* to crucify anyome, but we do know Sadduccees were in communication with Roman leaders fairly regularly
chugachmtnblues.bsky.social
There is a gap but the Synoptics agree that the temple incident happened immediately prior to the arrest by Rome. Its certainly not evidence *against* there being a connector or the Temple incident being historical

…I’m Jewish and I had relatives who survived the Holocaust. this is not about Jew-hatred on my part.
chugachmtnblues.bsky.social
but the gospels *also* say that the Sadducees brought him to Roman attention, so if you use the gospels alone to determine what happened you can’t make much headway
chugachmtnblues.bsky.social
”They” meaning “particular Sadduccees,” not “the Jews“ in some weird abstract form.

The Jews of 1st century Judea were an occupied people, and just like occupied people all through world history (including in WW2 Poland) some of them collaborated.

I don’t think Jews have special powers over anyone, nor do I think they ”killed God” since I don’t believe Jesus was God, nor do I believe they killed Jesus
chugachmtnblues.bsky.social
*all* scholars, Emily? Really?
chugachmtnblues.bsky.social
What? No, the Roman state killed Jesus at the order of Pilate. But something caused him to cross the
Roman radar in the first place and the Temple incident seems like a solid explanation.

Lots of stuff from the classical era is single-source. Not all scholars of the Bible have a vested interest in making Christianity seem innocent.

Solid overview here

I believe Amy-Jill Levine, perhaps the preeminent Jewish scholar of the NT, believes the incident was historical but id have to double check

Parts of the Gospel do reflect historical reality, sure. They are (obviously) not completely accurate. Scholars disagree about which parts are accurate, and id say that the general consensus is that the cleansing of the temple incident (more as described in the Synoptics, not John) are historical
chugachmtnblues.bsky.social
It seems to have been what motivated the Sadduccees going to the Romans.
chugachmtnblues.bsky.social
It was nearly two years ago and i wish I hadn’t l, so, no, I don’t remember. If you’re not going to watch it anyway, what’s the point of asking me where I saw it?
chugachmtnblues.bsky.social
If you absolutely insist on seeing it you can find it on an instageam account called the.israel.files although I don’t think that’s where I originally saw it
chugachmtnblues.bsky.social
Yeah so this isn’t quite as earthshaking as all that but it’s still dope
chugachmtnblues.bsky.social
its a pretty solid explanation for why he was arrested and crucified soon thereafter
chugachmtnblues.bsky.social
He’s running for lt gov, I know nothing about palm tree theft
chugachmtnblues.bsky.social
We actually don’t know what Jesus said about the temple-cleansing incident. It probably happened but we don’t really know which if any of the things the Evangellists say h me said in the temple were actually said
chugachmtnblues.bsky.social
They got rid of David Eastman and this dude amost lost in 2022 so I’m actually optimistic

so you will dismiss video evidence, you’ll dismiss forensic evidence, you’ll dismiss eyewitness evidence. Why ask for evidence, then?
