I guess this is still Scenarist BD's encoder. It merely works out because the graphics always have the exact same shape: SBD dumb (and brittle) BDN converter is thereby not lead into mismanaging the object buffer.

Not an issue with SUPer, but some people prefer endless pain 🤷
With Digimon Movie Collection 2 showing up in people's hands, how about a little peek at one of the most complex sub effects we've done so far? The original dub replaced the Japanese credits with a Windows-themed overlay, so we copied that for ours.

This insane bit, from the dub of Rascal Does Not Dream of Santa Claus ep 10

The line is actually "I'm enraptured."

The Sony DoStudio Blu-ray authoring suite no longer works, globally!

The software has a timebomb (bug, or intentional) that prevents exporting anything past Sept or Oct. 2025. Quite a few post-production studios must be in deep trouble now, as they must urgently get an alternative.

Ollang's site is some of the worst AI buzzword soup I've seen in a while.

"Agentic AI workflows!"
"AI-first platform!"
"AI-powered accessibility!"
Humans in the loop? "Optional!"
That's "Localization reimagined for the modern enterprise!"

Sure is great to see Crunchyroll using something like this!

After publishing this article, I've heard from many that CR seems to be using AI to produce dub CCs. Now, thanks to a slip-up CR had with episode 6 dub of The Banished Court Magician, we can say that with 100% certainty: Crunchyroll is using the AI service Ollang.com for its dub closed captions!

Ask yourself this: Do you want this to be the future of your anime watching experience, forever? If your answer is no, then act on it! If you are a journalist or anyone with a platform, talk about this! If you know such people, urge them to do so! Use my article as base! Now, before it's too late!

Important update: I have received word from insiders that Crunchyroll executives have deemed the user backlash to be small enough that their subtitle enshittification & OOONA plans will NOT be cancelled, only delayed.

I have added an update to the article. There's a summary at the top now too.

Crunchyroll is destroying its subtitles for no good reason

A ton of research and effort went into this one. This is the article to read to get to the bottom of Crunchyroll's subtitle changes!

With the Fall 2025 anime season, Crunchyroll demonstrates zero respect for anime as a medium as the presentation quality of its subtitles reach an all-time low.

roughly 40 Mbps HEVC bitstream for each version of the movie. Spooky.
When A-ko's film was scanned, it was done at 4K in the hopes in the future a 4K disc could be done & now is the time!

First... Project A-ko is here dubbed & subbed, in 4K w/ HDR, in both 16:9 & 4:3.

This is a gorgeous 4K remaster & the HDR pops. (Screenshots tonemapped to SDR.)

So while we have seen some shows on Crunchyroll get updated with better subtitles, I would like to remind everyone that many shows haven't. I also reached out to some insiders, and so far there has been no clear internal communication about changing course back to comprehensive typesetting either.

Daiz' article is great, albeit not so accessible to someone uneducated about the extensive use of on-screen text in anime.

I do strongly disagree with the hardsub take. There are enough code monkeys and subtitling formats to have a CDN that distributes subtitles based on the client capabilities.

So I'm trying to replace some old screenshots of typesetting on Crunchyroll with fresh ones, only to find out that the back catalog entries I'm looking for have had their subtitles updated to the new no-typesetting style. So much for Crunchyroll "fixing" the issue, they're blowing full steam ahead

So I just found the company who actually authored the discs, Diversified Video Solutions… and they’re based in the US, but clearly state they were working with Crunchyroll GmbH. Now I’m even more confused.
